ᐅ Heating load calculation or room heating load

Hello everyone,

We are currently dealing with heating. It will come down to a ground source heat pump. The underfloor heating and the pump now need to be optimally configured. The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) here is more for official purposes rather than active use. So a proper hydraulic balancing is definitely mandatory.

Now it’s about the sizing of the heating system. For example, Stiebel Eltron offers a heating load calculation. However, this is probably not a "room heating load" calculation. I think it is more of an overall calculation. What is the difference between heating load and room heating load? Do both need to be calculated independently, or how should this be handled? Is it enough to have just a room heating load calculated?

I would appreciate some clarity in this jungle, thanks!

I have also considered commissioning the room-by-room heating load calculation and underfloor heating design privately and then providing it to the general contractor or heating installer as a reference. Would you also do this? Has anyone had experience with TGA-Manager (.de)? The total cost is about 400 EUR.

According to my energy consultant (KfW 55), the general contractor or heating installer is also required to carry this out and later prove it using a VDZ form. Would you still commission it privately, considering they probably won’t put much effort into the calculations?

Have you had experience with other providers, and if so, at what costs? This concerns the complete package including heating load calculation and hydraulic balancing "according to method B."

Can you share the HVAC planner’s contact, or send it via PM? They only need the floor plans, right (I’m not from FFM)?

Unfortunately, I can’t send PMs yet (what a rule...). Feel free to message me, I just don’t want to advertise publicly in the forum.

Regarding the other question: Yes, initially the total heating load is estimated or calculated to determine the size of the heat pump. Afterwards, the room-by-room design for the underfloor heating is done. However, I find this approach unnecessary. Only the room-specific heating load provides a truly realistic dimensioning of the heat pump. This step is mostly for the heating installers to estimate costs for a quote.

Hello everyone,

I have been reading this forum for a long time, and this is my first post. I will introduce myself properly in the next few days.

I want to briefly join the discussion here because I have a question. I asked my heating installer whether a room-by-room heat load calculation is carried out, since the underfloor heating should, of course, be optimally designed. The answer was: “Yes, heat load according to DIN EN 12831, calculated by our system technician.” Is this a room-by-room calculation or something more general that covers the whole house? It is a prefabricated house, but the floor plan is custom-made for us, so it’s unique.

A few quick details: timber frame construction – Tecalor THZ 5.5 eco – expected installation date September 2020 – trades managed by the prefabricated house company.

Best regards

It’s best to start a separate thread...
So the contract is already signed? What has been contractually agreed upon?

Unfortunately, I can’t send private messages either. It’s a completely ridiculous rule. With over 150 forum posts, you should have been granted permission by now.

Anyway, we would all be interested in your recommendation, and honestly, this isn’t advertising since you don’t get paid for it. Many brands and products are discussed in forums like this, and this kind of exchange is very helpful.

So it would be great if you could openly share your experience here. Thanks!!!

Try searching for Ingenieurbüro Heckmann. As I said, I find their calculations very good, and the design of the underfloor heating system is exactly as you would want it:
- 17x2mm (0.67x0.08 inch) piping
- no circuits longer than 85m (279 feet)
- circuits of equal length
- close spacing (almost consistently 5cm (2 inches) in our case) to keep the supply temperature low
- no unrealistic room heating load values

Additionally, they respond quickly to questions and can answer them competently.
