Herr Stein4 Oct 2016 09:25Hello everyone,
After reading quite a bit in the forum about different heating systems, I am increasingly convinced that I would like to install a gas condensing boiler. The concept of air source heat pumps does not convince me in cases of low temperatures, and ground or water source heat pumps are not allowed on the intended plot.
My current idea is as follows: gas heating + support for domestic hot water production through photovoltaic panels + a ventilation system with heat recovery.
The house will be about 150 sqm (1,615 sq ft). I have a few questions for you:
- Does this combination make sense?
- Why are solar thermal systems typically used? Do they have a better efficiency for water heating than photovoltaic? The advantage of photovoltaic would be that the electricity can also be used for other purposes...
- What about the costs? Is photovoltaic more expensive than solar thermal? How much does a ventilation system with heat recovery cost for a 150 sqm (1,615 sq ft) house?
Thanks in advance for your valuable help in this jungle.
Best regards,
Herr Stein

ErikErdgas10 Oct 2016 17:29Good day Mr. Stein,
The concept you mentioned, combining a gas condensing boiler for heat generation with a ventilation system including heat recovery, generally makes a good impression. This setup should fundamentally allow for relatively low fuel costs and a good indoor climate, although no one can predict the medium- and long-term development of gas/oil and electricity prices.
A critical point is certainly the photovoltaic system for heat generation mentioned in this case. The costs of solar thermal and photovoltaic systems cannot be directly compared here, as normally the electrical energy from a photovoltaic system would be used to operate, for example, a heat pump. Converting electrical energy into heat one-to-one (e.g., via an electric resistance heater) does not make sense energetically or economically, since the specific costs are higher than those of alternative heating solutions. However, if there is a high self-consumption of an additional photovoltaic system, it can of course be attractive for providing electricity to your home.
Best regards, Erik

Bieber081510 Oct 2016 18:51@Herr Stein, an air-to-water heat pump is not allowed to be installed? Are you sure?
The ventilation system with heat recovery will cost around 10,000 to 12,000 euros (as a rough estimate).

I don’t think the approach is wrong and have thought about it carefully.
A gas condensing boiler for heating and a heat pump for domestic hot water, plus photovoltaic panels on the roof independently.
Has no one implemented this yet?
Our alternative would be an air-to-water heat pump and photovoltaic panels.
In both cases with a central mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery.
Geothermal energy is prohibited.

Where exactly did someone suggest combining gas and a heat pump? Or am I missing something?
It doesn’t seem very sensible to me to install two (expensive) heating systems, especially if the main focus is on gas, since the hot water from it is almost just a byproduct. What additional benefit would a heat pump provide?
Or are you perhaps mixing up heat pumps and ventilation systems with heat recovery?
