ᐅ Is it better to install the heat pump inside the house or outdoors?

Hello everyone,

we are currently considering the advantages and disadvantages of installing the heat pump either in the basement or outside in the garden.

Our architect has simply planned to place the heat pump behind a retaining wall in the garden.

- What are your experiences?
- What are the approximate cost differences?
- Would you recommend installing it indoors or outdoors?

The lot is 450 m² (5400 sq ft), with the house including a double garage occupying about 140 m² (1500 sq ft). There would be enough space in the basement.

Thanks

Hello everyone,

I think this is a really good point. Until now, I had only considered it for aesthetic reasons and had doubts about the split units. I was genuinely surprised to learn that these devices can be so noisy.

As for me, I will definitely take it into consideration.

Best regards

Sorry if I’m chiming in here out of self-interest, but I didn’t want to start a separate thread:

How is the noise level of a typical air-to-water heat pump when installed indoors? If there is only a standard interior door and a 7-step staircase (split-level) between the heat pump and the dining area, will the heat pump still be loud? I know this is quite a general question, but I’m curious whether this kind of setup would even be suitable for us.

Outdoor installation is not an option for us.

Thanks!

So, we have a split system (Alpha Innotec). The outdoor unit is located behind the garage, and even our neighbor was surprised at how quiet the unit is.

There are definitely differences. Our other neighbor also has an outdoor unit, which is noticeably (!) louder. I wouldn’t want one like that in the garden either.

Hello,
we have an air-to-water heat pump from IWS (or something like that). The outdoor unit is located behind the garage. It sometimes makes an annoying noise which fortunately neither we nor the neighbors hear much due to the "radiation direction." In the direction of the noise, there is a field.

Other neighbors have the unit installed inside the garage, and a significant amount of water drips from the ventilation grilles.

Neither situation seems ideal...

You can clearly see the wide range of pros and cons regarding the manufacturer models. Hmm… it probably won’t be easy to resolve, just like everything else.

Hello,

Your architect’s plan says it all: “planned behind a retaining wall in the garden.” So you don’t have to hear the noise yourself, but it doesn’t matter if you bother others.

Because of the slope, the retaining wall would be there anyway. The whole thing would be located below the kitchen window.

But what about the cost side? Putting it all in the basement involves more effort (platform, supply and exhaust air ducts...) right?
