ᐅ Have you experienced any dents or scratches in your KALLAX unit after transportation?

Espen6Hello everyone,
I recently bought a KALLAX shelf from IKEA, and for transport, I unfortunately had to lay it flat on the front passenger seat and partly in the trunk. I noticed that some dents and small scratches appeared on the edges, even though I protected the surface with blankets.
Therefore, my question to the group: Have you ever experienced your KALLAX shelf being damaged during transport or a move? If so, how severe were the dents or scratches, and did you feel that the material is generally vulnerable?
I’m particularly interested in whether this is a common issue or if I was just unlucky during transport. Are there any tips on how to best protect the surface, especially for longer transports?
Looking forward to your experiences!

Have you ever experienced your KALLAX shelf getting damaged during transport or a move?In my opinion, anyone who complains about scratches on a chipboard shelf hasn’t quite understood the product. It’s not designed for heavy-duty use; IKEA is selling mass-produced items here, not designer pieces. So if it’s not handled carefully, dents and marks are almost inevitable.
If you’re expecting a perfect shelf during transport, you should opt for solid wood instead. Damage on a KALLAX? Of course, that’s normal and no surprise.
I can well understand the original poster’s question, as the susceptibility of KALLAX furniture to transport damage is indeed a sensitive issue.
The main point is the material: KALLAX is made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or particleboard, which is coated with a melamine surface but does not consist of solid wood. This means the surface is quite prone to scratches—especially on the edges, which often come into contact with hard objects or the car door during transport.
Another factor is the mode of transport: if the shelf lies on its back or side, the entire surface is exposed to potential stress that can cause dents or marks.
My advice: store the shelf as upright as possible during transport and provide strong padding, such as foam or thick blankets. Securing it with straps can also prevent unwanted shifting, which can lead to dents.
It would also be interesting to know whether you noticed any damage immediately after assembly or if the marks appeared only during transport.
In general: even though the material is not very durable, it is important to minimize damage as much as possible. What has your experience been with assembly? Did you notice any spots that are naturally more vulnerable?

Blankets plus bubble wrap usually do the trickMay I ask how you attach bubble wrap to such a large shelf? Do you wrap it completely or just cover the edges?
Thanks for the tips so far; I will try to pack differently in the future. Hopefully, the shelf will hold up better then.
Good morning,
to answer Espen6’s question in detail and offer some practical tips, here is my method for transporting KALLAX shelves that minimizes dents and scratches:
1. Preparation: First, protect all edges of the shelf with edge protectors made of foam or neoprene. These are inexpensive and can be found at hardware stores.
2. Padding: Then wrap the entire piece of furniture with a thick blanket or bubble wrap. Pay special attention to covering the sides well, as they can easily hit sharp edges inside the vehicle.
3. Securing: Fix the padding in place with packing tape or stretch wrap to prevent anything from shifting during transport.
4. Securing in the vehicle: Position the shelf upright if possible and secure it firmly with ratchet straps or tie-down straps to prevent sliding or tipping.
5. Care when loading and unloading: The furniture should be carried by two people to avoid impacts and bumps.
If you transport the shelf multiple times, I also recommend using a plastic or felt mat as a base inside the vehicle to protect the underside from scratches.
In summary: KALLAX furniture is prone to damage, but careful packaging can effectively prevent it. Hope this helps!
