Hello everyone,
I just registered here. My name is Michael, I am 31 years old and I come from the beautiful city of Cologne – Alaaf.

This week, I put together a wall unit from the Besta system at IKEA, but I need to hang two of the pieces on a concrete wall.
The two pieces are the following:

Dark brown open TV cabinet with two rows of compartments and shelves

Black wooden cabinet with three adjustable shelves and feet

What kind of anchors and screws would you recommend for mounting them on the wall?

Is the hanging system that comes with it—the plastic parts—really reliable?
If I understood correctly, I’m supposed to screw the hangers onto the back panel and then screw directly through the cabinet frame into the wall from the inside of the cabinet?

So many questions.

Best regards, Michael

Recently, I wanted to assemble a Besta combination and proactively asked IKEA how much weight a wall-mounted cabinet can support. The answer was: 30 kg (66 lbs) including the door.

The weight is not transferred from the back panel to the bracket, but rather through the screw and the plastic peg that slides into the groove of the back panel.
There are also other mounting brackets for such cabinets, for example from Hettich, but these require very precise drilling of holes in the side panels. Unfortunately, the metal brackets with hanging rails for Besta from IKEA are only available in the USA.

In the end, we did not use the cabinet carcasses because they had too strong an odor for us and caused problems.

Okay, so it should be possible as long as the 30kg (66 pounds) including the door is not exceeded. I'm curious to see.

I chose a squared timber beam as additional support, directly anchored to the wall beneath the BESTA unit. This also makes installation much easier because you don’t have to hold the cabinet while screwing it in; it simply rests on the timber beam. Additionally, this allows multiple units to be perfectly aligned at the same height.

For us, this worked well because the cabinet hangs quite deep and the timber beam is not visible (unless you lie on the floor).

There is also no reason not to add a fourth mounting point to the 120 cm (47 inches) wide unit instead of the recommended three. The necessary material (this plastic part) is included anyway.

The plastic parts only have a partial load-bearing function! They also serve to prevent the back panel of the shelf from bending when screwing it to the wall. The plastic piece is a simple spacer, which also acts as a drilling template.

8mm (5/16 inch) anchors and countersunk screws that penetrate 4cm (1.5 inches) deep into the wall are definitely sufficient. I would therefore use 6x75mm (6x3 inch) or 6x80mm (6x3.15 inch) screws along with a standard plastic wall plug.

The weakest point of the Besta furniture is the top panel, which consists of a chipboard frame inside and cardboard honeycomb. This top panel supports the side panels and therefore carries the weight of all the shelves.

If you want to hang Besta furniture on the wall that is not suitable for wall mounting (i.e., furniture that is 40cm (16 inches) deep and taller than 38cm (15 inches)), you need to support it from underneath with metal brackets. These must be screwed into the wall and bear the weight of the shelf.

8mm (0.3 inch) wall plugs and countersunk screws that reach 4cm (1.6 inches) deep into the wall are definitely sufficient. I would therefore use 6x75mm (6x3 inch) or 6x80mm (6x3.1 inch) screws along with a standard plastic expansion plug.

I followed this advice, but now my shelf is lying on the floor... What did I do wrong??? Using 8mm (0.3 inch) wall plugs with 6x85mm (6x3.3 inch) screws in the drywall... What is the issue...??? Help

For expansion anchors: Screw length inside the wall = anchor length minus 5 mm (0.2 inches).

The information about the expansion anchor was probably meant for a standard masonry wall. For drywall panels, there are special anchors available, or suitable hollow wall anchors can be used. The websites of anchor manufacturers provide helpful guidance.
