Good evening everyone
I’m starting a small collection thread here for photos and progress updates on our second building project.
We’ve already moved to the Palatinate region to be closer to the construction site. Now we’re watching eagerly and happily as our (hopefully final) dream home takes shape near family.
One big challenge still ahead of us is the facade design. I really love the Nordic style with brickwork and mullioned windows. That won’t be possible here for two reasons: firstly, no one here can do bricklaying, and secondly, it would stand out too much. We will be going with a rendered facade. How to design the colors of the facade and windows to still create some country house / cottage charm is currently still a work in progress mentally.
Otherwise, I’m sharing our plans here and how it will eventually be built.
The support pillar marked near the kitchen island could be removed for a small extra cost, so that will be gone.
The room for “garden equipment” under the garage will get a partition wall for structural reasons.
It won’t be fully finished living space like in the house, but underfloor heating will be installed, along with a lockable door and a window. It’s meant to store garden tools but also some of the building services equipment, since the utility room (HAR) is quite small, and maybe be used as a party room.
We had three construction companies in the final selection. In the end, we chose the “doer” – a builder recommended to us here by friends and family. No website, no smartphone, but he is on site every day himself working in overalls. He has a very good reputation in this area and now rarely builds single-family homes. We were a bit lucky through personal connections and a very friendly initial phone call to get our foot in the door. So far we are very satisfied with this choice.

I went 15 years without having my dishwasher directly next to the sink because I valued raising it higher more than having it close to the sink. In my interim apartment, the dishwasher wasn’t next to the sink either, and here we have a wooden floor in the kitchen. I never had problems with splashes, and if a drop of water falls on the floor while rinsing, so what. The wooden floor definitely doesn’t get stained from that. Of course, I would also like it closer because, after all, I’m “lazy” too 😉 , but for me ergonomics come before immediate proximity.
I find the idea of placing the dishwasher low to make me move more personally misguided. My mother has done sports all her life and continues despite some limitations, as with age there are aches and pains. She is glad not to have to bend over when emptying the dishwasher but to do it at a comfortable height.
But as I said, personal experience and priorities play a big role. What is out of the question for one person might be perfect for another.

I’m curious to hear in a year or two whether you’re happy with the appliance arrangement or if you would have done it differently. For me, the dishwasher definitely belongs right next to the sink. Rinse off leftovers, then load the dishes. The distance would be too far for me—not because of walking, but because of dripping. We already had a very similar distance between the sink and dishwasher in our first house for two years. We kept the same setup because we found it very practical. We’re not really “pre-rinsers.” If anything, food scraps go into the organic waste bin or compost, and the drawer is even a bit closer to the dishwasher than before. The sink-to-dishwasher distance has remained about the same because we found the workflow ideal there.Oh, and in other news:
I can hardly believe it myself—the glorious moment was less than an hour ago—but:
Fiber optic is in the house. It’s laid, connected, and tested. I feel a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders, roughly the size of Uluru. 🤨

How much is the distance between the island and the tall cabinet line? The dishwasher doors extend 64cm (25 inches) into the room.
From the pull-out, it extends 45cm (18 inches) into the room from the front edge of the cabinet. I think about a meter (3 feet) if I’m reading the plan correctly. I could measure it, but I don’t find it that important. We haven’t planned to store dishes in the opposite drawers. Maybe pots, but if they have to make a temporary stop on the island, I wouldn’t mind.

Everyone has different work habits.
We don’t necessarily pre-rinse either, but we don’t want to open the dishwasher for every spoon or cup. So, small items that accumulate between meals are first collected in the sink. Of course, they are wet when putting them into the dishwasher.
But if you have already found what works for you, then that’s perfect.

We rarely use the oven, it could just as well be located in the garage. I feel the same way – though in my case, the garage is half a kilometer (0.3 miles) away from the house ;-)

What do you mean by that? As a layperson, I wouldn’t have noticed. Even without reading glasses: the joints on the back wall are at a different height than those on the side walls; and overall, the joint pattern on the back wall looks like a "random bond."
