ᐅ Timber Frame House Renovation – Architect or Structural Engineer?

Hello,
we have just purchased a timber-framed house that is about 200 years old (historic monument) and would like to have it renovated.
Several things need to be done:
a new roof including conversion of the attic and adding dormer(s), doors, windows, flooring, electrical system, plumbing, heating, as well as a small extension/conservatory that visually harmonizes with the timber framing.

Should we rather look for an architect or a structural engineer?

The more affordable architect was recommended to us by the heritage conservation office.
However, the more expensive one, whom we found through our own research, seemed more competent.
According to references, both have experience in this field.
We are surprised that there can be such a difference in price, even though everyone is supposed to follow the official fee schedule.
Is it safe to assume that the lower price won’t remain if we choose that architect? A bait-and-switch?
What percentage range is realistic in this case?

No, the representative from the heritage preservation office gave the name when asked.

Have you checked references with the heritage office? Or knocked on neighbors’ doors?

I would prioritize that the person has experience with heritage properties and the area. Otherwise, it’s a back-and-forth with the building authority.
