Hello everyone,

the title says it all. We are currently planning the electrical system for our new build.
The electrician has planned a Hager “technical center” with a multimedia panel. This is where the LAN cables will terminate. Additionally, I would like to install the router and a NAS (Synology 214play) there.
It looks quite neat and seems to fit everything needed, but does this make sense?

Today, I was wondering why I wasn’t offered a server cabinet.
What are your experiences? What makes more sense? How does it affect the cost?

I would be very grateful for some advice.

What do you mean by more complex routings?
Basically, anything related to firewalling, such as selective forwarding, manipulating ports, and generally any tasks that require more advanced handling like NAT for specific protocols, multicast, and so on. Of course, this is not usually necessary in a typical home network, but since nowadays many people deal with VLANs and differently prioritized packets, it should be mentioned that typical advanced switches are not always fully suitable for these purposes.

Not everyone has such a large network at home like @rick2018.
It’s less about the size and more about the complexity, and when I read about the advanced setups that some completely inexperienced hobby admins put together here, I wonder how people can handle these things so confidently with so little knowledge. This might also be because nowadays people are often led to believe that even the most complicated tasks can be easily learned with the right YouTube video. (However, relevant background knowledge is usually still missing.)
