Hello everyone,

we are currently deciding which plaster to use on and inside our house.

One open question is still the exterior and interior plaster.

As is well known, there are different options available in various price ranges.

I am aware of the advantages and disadvantages of gypsum plaster and lime-(cement) plaster. However, it is difficult to estimate whether it might be possible to save some money by choosing gypsum plaster.

What type of plaster do you use and why?

Thank you very much for your opinions 🙂

Best regards

Hello Abellio,

you will most often see the recommendation that gypsum plaster is sufficient for the "normal" rooms, while lime-cement plaster is preferred for wet rooms. Some will recommend clay plaster. I will stick with gypsum plaster everywhere.
1. Because my general contractor charges an outrageous extra fee for lime-cement plaster
2. Because I hope that with controlled mechanical ventilation, it will be fine in the bathrooms as well.

Hi Tolentino,

Thanks for your quick reply.

Yes, cost is definitely a deciding factor for us as well...

According to initial rough estimates, gypsum plaster is about 30% to 50% cheaper than lime-cement plaster.

Whether this is necessary is the question – thanks a lot for your insight!

Hello,

I work as a site manager for a general contractor, and we use gypsum plaster 99% of the time, with Aquaprotect gypsum plaster specifically in the bathrooms.

The costs do vary significantly. However, I also find that the visual results are much better compared to cement plasters, and I wouldn’t choose cement plaster myself.

Of course, gypsum is softer and therefore easier to damage, but it is also very easy to repair. Definitely recommended.

Most gypsum plasters are also suitable for wet rooms....

I originally wanted clay plaster in my new build, but it was too expensive, so I chose gypsum plaster because I wanted to paint immediately afterwards. The downside is definitely the vulnerability—if you have small children, it can be annoying......

Especially if you have a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery, the type of plaster doesn’t really matter.......

However, there is no perfect plaster :-)

We chose clay plaster because it regulates humidity. In the bathrooms of the "children’s apartments," we used lime plaster, as we didn’t want to rely entirely on the current residents being careful with ventilation.

If you are careful, gypsum plaster also works in bathrooms. Lime plaster naturally inhibits mold growth.
