Hello everyone,

Our rainwater downpipe has become extremely annoying. Whenever it rains, very loud water sounds can be heard. To give you a comparison: it sounds like a man standing and urinating directly into a toilet bowl, always aiming precisely at the water.

The contractor already tried unsuccessfully to address this noise issue. However, they only inspected up to about 3 meters (10 feet) high.

The terraced house we live in has three full floors, so the workers did not want to take out their big ladder and check the entire length of the downpipe.

Attached are a few pictures. The house front shows the course of the downpipe. The other pictures show the transition from the gutter through the mounting connector into the downpipe.

We compared our downpipe connection with that of our neighbor’s house. There, absolutely no noises occur.

We noticed that the cutout opposite the downpipe is clearly offset, so that during heavier rain the water more or less splashes directly into the downpipe and there, with significantly higher flow velocity below, also causes a lot of noise.

I hope I was able to describe reasonably well what is causing us concern.

Now the all-important question: Can we claim this as a defect?

I am fed up with sleeping with earplugs, or better said, fed up with my ears.

Thank you for your help

This happened several years ago, but maybe there has been a solution since then?
I have the same problem with a single-family house, and here it’s also the case that there are two identical houses, but one makes noise and the other does not.
I tend to suspect the gutter itself, as there is no noise coming from the downpipe.
The construction company is acting as if they don’t know, saying that since there is no difference between the two houses, nothing can be done.
Do you possibly have a solution or a tip for me?
