Hello everyone,
We recently visited the construction site of our general contractor. The house had gray windows on the outside, and my husband was immediately impressed.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we had to wait a bit before entering the house, and that’s when I noticed that the window handles were white. Then I looked at the windows from the inside – also white. I didn’t like that. For me, both the outside and inside being gray would not be an option.
It seems like almost every new build has gray windows these days. Is gray the new white now, or just a trend, and will the classic white windows make a comeback?
I like white, my husband prefers gray...
What did you decide on?

This is definitely just a trend. Take a drive through any new housing development. A trend that has actually been establishing itself for several years now.

The same discussion took place about a month ago or so. I couldn’t find that, otherwise I wouldn’t have started this thread. Besides, I didn’t want a discussion, just experiences and opinions.

I admit to following the trend here: anthracite gray windows both inside and outside. Do you no longer like it, or would you have done it differently in hindsight?

When did your spaceship land on Earth, or how long were you in a coma that anthracite windows seem new to you? Read my post again. Where does it say that I was referring to a brand-new current trend? I wrote “feels like every new build.” I have seen windows like that in new houses 3.5 or even 8 years ago, but I never really paid attention to it before, because I didn’t care whether the interior color was different or not.
Or have you ever taken an interest in black and white cars just because they have been on the roads for decades, while you yourself drive a red car and don’t plan to buy a different color anyway?
It’s not just the windows; almost all roofs are dark now. The trend changes roughly every 20 years: around 1970, all roofs were black, by 1990 mostly red, until about 2005. Since then, black roofs have been common again. According to my prediction, red roofs will return around 2025.

A colleague of mine chose burgundy, and I thought it looked great because hardly anyone has that color at the moment.

In the end, it’s a matter of personal taste. It would have bothered us. Yes, I would have preferred to have dark colors inside as well. In the prefabricated house, I had ebony-colored wooden windows – really classy.
Regarding trends: the prefab house was built in 1978. My parents' house also has black windows, coincidentally also built in 1978.

White is timeless. Anthracite is too. All the shades of gray, from white to pure black, are timeless. It’s a “color family.”

You can also see the outer frames from the inside... every time a window is open, you see the dark color. Thanks for the information. We hadn’t thought about that. So far, we planned light wood decoration on the outside and white on the inside. Now everything will be white.

It's not just the windows; there are also almost exclusively dark roofs now.The advantage of dark roofs is that solar thermal panels don’t stand out as much. However, we will still choose a red roof, hoping that solar panels will soon be available in other colors as well.Similar topics
