Hello everyone,

I’m new here and have a question that I haven’t found an answer to yet.

We are currently building an outdoor kitchen, and we want to install granite tiles there. A friend recently pointed out a potential issue, and I’d like to get your advice on it.

This is what the finished result should look like:

Outdoor kitchen with grill and countertop under pergola at brick house, paved terrace

For the base of the countertop, I laid concrete lawn edging stones – as seen here:

Outdoor kitchen area made of brick with concrete slabs and wood cladding

Now, I was told that there could be stresses caused by this, and I shouldn’t install the granite tiles (61 x 30.5 x 1 cm (24 x 12 x 0.4 inches)) directly onto the concrete parts. Of course, I would use a proper flexible tile adhesive, but that alone would not be sufficient – I would need at least an uncoupling membrane to prevent cracks in the granite tiles due to tension.

Since this whole installation will be outdoors and exposed to all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from -20 to +30°C (-4 to 86°F) …

Do I really need to use an uncoupling membrane, or is a good flexible tile adhesive enough?
