ᐅ Glass or louvered roof as a terrace covering

Hello everyone

The topic of "glass patio roofing" has already been discussed several times in this forum. It has become clear that such a glass roof only works well in summer with external awnings/shutters; otherwise, it gets unbearably hot. So far, so good.

Now, to all owners of such glass roofs with external shutters: how comfortable is it actually to sit under the glass roof with the shutters down during the (peak) summer? Is there really no heat buildup? Or does it still become unbearable under the glass despite the external shutters?

Our architect is currently strongly advising against a glass roof because it seems that—even with external shading—it is hardly bearable underneath during summer. He recommends a gravel roof instead.

For me, however, the advantages of a glass patio roof with sun protection shutters are obvious:

  • No darkening of the living room due to fixed shading (wood/gravel roof), especially in winter.
  • Extremely flexible: without lowered shutters, it is still comfortable to sit underneath on colder (sunny) days (which is hardly possible with a wood or gravel roof because it simply gets too cold without direct sunlight).

What do you think? Many thanks for your experiences.

PS: As an alternative, for example, a louvered roof could be installed for shading. This is said to be waterproof, and in peak summer the louvers can be easily adjusted horizontally to let warm air escape at the top, preventing heat buildup underneath. Does anyone have experience with this? I would be very grateful for any input.

Best regards

Phew... I can’t tell you the brand of the aluminum structure. It is custom-made at the factory since we have a depth of 397.5 cm (13 feet).

The awnings and motors are from Warema. The vertical awnings are made of a fairly sturdy "screen fabric" that can be wiped clean. It is also not completely opaque.

We also had two other quotes. One was around €26,500 and the other nearly €35,000! And in that offer, the canopy was only 3 meters (10 feet) deep!

Hello everyone,

I need some advice on our situation and the price of a quote we received.

We are currently looking for shading for our terrace. Ideally 6x4 m (20x13 ft), but 5x4 m (16x13 ft) would also work.
The orientation is southwest, and we would like to be able to close off the sides (south) and the front (west) as well.

We visited a home show and spoke with a metal/construction company specializing in windows, conservatories, and similar structures.

During the discussion and after roughly setting our budget (“under €10,000”) and realizing together that a terrace roof would be too expensive (and actually not what we want) we came across the idea of a “textile terrace roof.”

They suggested mounting an awning (Erwilo, coated with acrylate) on the wall (ETICS/synthetic insulation system) and instead of supporting it like a typical pergola with two front posts, to install an aluminum frame underneath that resembles a terrace roof. This would allow us to add Zip-Screen vertical blinds on the front and especially the sides. There would be no support posts on the north side at the back.
On the south side, there would be a sloped triangular/opening element permanently shaded with a solid metal sheet or frosted glass.
Everything is motorized but without radio control, as we plan to add Z-Wave actuators ourselves. The offer still includes radio control, but this apparently does not really affect the price.
It should also be possible to later replace the substructure with something stronger including a glass roof, while keeping the awning mounted on the wall and installed above. This upgrade option was emphasized a lot, but I doubt we will ever want a full terrace roof.
The price includes foundations and installation.

After a further on-site meeting, where everything sounded very promising, the offer came in and the price shocked us:
€19,000 for 6x4 m (20x13 ft).

Even the smaller variant (5x4 m / 16x13 ft) is still €18,000.

Is this a case of being overcharged?

We also got another quote without side and front shading because that company only installs the manufacturer’s awning with the manufacturer’s pergola supports and offered a Warema 6x4 m (20x13 ft) for €6,700 but without foundations.
However, we don’t want that.

We are still waiting on a quote from another metal fabricator but fear the price will be similar to the first one.

Another company outright refused to visit the site, declined to offer a textile terrace roof (due to wind/dirt, and interestingly said a real terrace roof would even be cheaper!?) and now wants to offer us a terrace roof with shading on the inside, front, and sides without an on-site meeting. They claim it will not be more expensive than the “strange awning stuff” the others are offering.

What is your general opinion on the idea of a textile terrace roof, and what do you think of the price offered?

We have a freestanding terrace roof made of aluminum and glass, equipped with a retractable awning and a vertical awning, both Weinor models with Somfy controls, sized to your specifications, including foundation and installation, with an infrared heater, LED lights, and rainwater drainage for €15,000.

It is freestanding because the house has a timber frame construction and an external thermal insulation composite system.

This is just for price estimation. I am from NRW.

Hello everyone,

I would like to get an assessment of our situation and the price of a quote.

Based on the discussion there and defining the approximate budget ("under 10,000€") and the shared understanding that a solid patio roof is financially out of reach (and we actually don’t want one), we then came to the topic of a "textile patio roof."

What do you think in general about the idea of a textile patio roof, and what do you think about the offered price?

Which part of Germany are you from? We got a glass patio roof including awnings for less than your budget, so if I were you, I would consider looking again for a fixed roof.

Well then? I’ll need one of those myself sometime...

I can’t compare to your roof cover... The dimensions were about 4 x 5 meters (13 x 16 feet). It was self-built from wood. The roof was made of slightly tinted corrugated plexiglass sheets to avoid it getting too dark in the living room during winter. In summer, it would be too hot to sit here since it faces directly south. So, I stretched a 4 x 4 meter (13 x 13 feet) sunshade sail under the roof. That makes it bearable.

The cost was about 600 euros for the wood, 600 euros for the roof including gutters, plus some small materials. It probably ended up costing around 1,500 euros total. I might add a picture in the next few days.
