Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into how to gently clean Ikea Metod cabinet fronts using environmentally friendly methods. The surface of these fronts is usually either laminated or satin-matte lacquered, so harsh cleaning agents or abrasive sponges can damage the finish.

I am especially interested in which natural or eco-friendly cleaning products have proven effective in removing common dirt (e.g., light grease stains, fingerprints, dust) without harming the fronts.

It would also be helpful to know what type of cloths or sponges work best—microfiber, cotton, or something else?

Does anyone have long-term experience or specific recommendations that also take sustainability into account? Thanks in advance!

I usually use warm water with a bit of curd soap. This works well for removing greasy spots. Microfiber cloths are great because they don’t scratch and absorb well. Important: don’t wipe too wet, otherwise water can get into the joints.

I usually just use warm water with a bit of pure soap.

That’s a very solid tip. Additionally, I would recommend treating stubborn dirt first with a diluted vinegar solution (about 1:10), but be sure to rinse with clean water afterward to avoid damaging the surface.

Metod fronts are often made of MDF with a foil coating or paint, which are quite sensitive to harsh cleaners. Avoid abrasive sponges at all costs.

Regarding the cloth choice: microfiber is definitely the best option because it absorbs dirt well while being gentle on the surface. You can use cotton cloths for buffing afterward if you want a streak-free finish.

Make sure the fronts do not stay wet for long periods, as water on edges and joints can cause the material to swell.

From an environmental standpoint, homemade solutions with pure soap and vinegar, used sparingly, are highly recommended since they are biodegradable.

Make sure that the fronts do not remain damp for extended periods, as water on edges and joints can cause the material to swell.

Absolutely crucial! After all, no one wants a freshly oiled guitar in the kitchen. 😉

I clean my Metod fronts with a mild mixture of lemon juice and water (1:5), which cleans the surface nicely and leaves a pleasantly fresh scent—without using harsh chemicals.

And yes, microfiber is truly the best cleaning companion; it not only absorbs dirt well but also protects the foil surface. A soft microfiber cloth, slightly dampened—that’s all you need.

For stubborn stains, I occasionally apply a bit of olive oil to a cloth, which helps to polish small dull spots—basically a little kitchen care miracle. Of course, use sparingly.

In summary: sustainable, gentle, and with a bit of kitchen magic—much better than any harsh chemicals!
