Hello everyone,

I have a question about the roof/roof renovation.

We are planning to replace our old windows later this year. Now the question is whether we should also replace the windows in the dormers or wait a few years, remove the dormers when the roof is replaced, and install only skylights.

I would appreciate an assessment of whether it is more expensive to reroof the house with the dormers in place or to remove the dormers first and then reroof (this would presumably involve structural work on the roof frame, right?).

I hope what I mean is clear.

If more information is needed, I will try to provide it.

I hope someone can help me—maybe there is a roofer among you.

Attached is a photo of the dormer; there are two in total. Skylights will be installed anyway.

Thanks.

No one here can really answer that – how are the rooms under the dormers being used?

I would suspect that removing the dormers, including disposal, and then rebuilding the roof substructure will be more costly.

Skylights are going to be installed in any case.

If you are going to add double casement windows anyway, why are you considering removing the protruding dormers? On one hand, you presumably need the daylight area, and on the other, it seems insufficiently sized – otherwise, why add double casement windows? Not to mention that double casement windows usually create more noise from rain than dormers do.

Kind regards

Living rooms and guest rooms.

That was actually my main question; I simply don’t know how complex it is and thought someone here might be able to give an approximate estimate.

It's a matter of cost, as it usually is. If it’s cheaper to remove the dormers than to reroof the roof with dormers, then the dormers will be removed. Also, the dormers don’t provide much natural light to the rooms.

Correct.

Aren’t there already windows designed to minimize noise from rain and such? I think I have seen something like that, but I’m not sure.
