ᐅ General Questions About Insulation

Hello forum community,

some of you might shake your heads in disbelief, but I have to ask a few beginner questions. Maybe they have already been answered, but during my quick browse today I couldn’t find anything on these topics. So here are my questions:

We want to build a house, as the topic suggests. Of course, it will be an energy-efficient or passive house. There are classifications like KfW 70, 55, 40 (energy efficiency standards). Naturally, we want to keep costs within a reasonable budget. I am interested in the required insulation values for each of these categories. Since thicker insulation means more weight, a prefabricated house might eventually be ruled out. Currently, I am looking at a solid construction house with walls using Duo Therm insulation but I am not fixed on that. A 30cm (12 inch) wall has a U-value of 0.21 W/m²K. How does that compare to the U-value of triple-glazed windows? And what about the corresponding roof insulation? A table with these values would be helpful. Who actually defines the classifications? Or is it all determined with the blower door test?

The rest is probably standard: solar panels on the roof, likely an air-to-water heat pump, underfloor heating, and of course, a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery to prevent mold. Perhaps you can understand and expand on my basic considerations? I want to avoid compensating for poor insulation with a larger heating system, but on the other hand, I don’t want to overspend on insulation either...

Best regards,
Axel

Hello Axel,

So you know, Bauexperte, I find it a bit inappropriate to just dismiss my questions,
And I find it "inappropriate" to take for granted that others will do the work for you, when you could get many questions answered here in the forums—exclusively because you are too unwilling to spend more than a "brief glance." Many users have shared extensive information here to specifically support beginners like you...!

just because you don’t like my German and my punctuation. And that person is even a moderator here? You should set an example, not complain.
I pointed out to you that your post is difficult to read due to missing punctuation; nothing more and nothing less. And by the way—I am not (or perhaps not yet) so softened by "the new social norms of this society" that I allow you to turn the tables on me 🙄

And then the typical advice about the 3 R’s (Read, read, and read). Why don’t you address my questions first like Karliseppel did, then you can criticize my German.
What "Karliseppel" does is up to "Karliseppel"—I often do other things than what is prematurely expected of me. And no, I do not respond if I do not receive a minimum level of cooperation from the questioner. Your refusal to read the material collected here on the HBF is a slap in the face for all those who have taken the time to share their experiences and advice here. I do not need to support such behavior; not even as a moderator.

Kind regards

Hello Axel,

So you find it inappropriate that we expect new users to read the existing posts – but you expect us to rewrite the same posts again just for you – and then you don’t even need to read those? Or how exactly did you imagine that?

Regards
Micha 😎

@ Axel

You still haven’t answered Karlis’ question about the weight.
I would also like to hear the answer.

Phew, everyone calm down.
No one here is forced to invest time or respond.
Just like you can skip a thread if you don’t want to or can’t contribute, the person asking the question can choose which answers to engage with.
And Axel – it’s true from your message that you don’t have much experience in this field yet. That’s okay. You already set yourself apart from many builders simply by trying to understand the topic.
And the question about the cost-effectiveness of additional insulation is absolutely legitimate.
This subject is still debated among professionals, but often overlooked because nobody can predict how energy prices will develop.
If things continue as they have in recent years, you won’t be able to insulate or save enough energy. If nuclear fusion becomes technically viable tomorrow, many will have backed the wrong horse.
Just keep at it, read a lot, and always consider who is telling you which story.
From my experience, very few people can really impress with up-to-date knowledge. The phrase “we’ve always done it this way” is still too common in construction, and you should also keep in mind “he who pays the piper calls the tune” when a product is presented as better than it probably is.

With that said… enjoy building 🙂

That is absolutely correct. It is also fair to assume that someone new here will first take the time to "read up." Many questions, especially for beginners, are answered through this process.

It is also true that no one is obligated to write here. However, in reality, many users take the time to share their own experiences and mistakes in a way that benefits others. That is the purpose of a forum like this, and yet the HBF remains quite unique in the scope of the free knowledge it offers. From my subjective point of view, this is proof that respectful interaction is highly valued here.

It follows logically that both the forum operator and the moderators pay close attention to maintaining and continuously improving this "unique quality."

To some extent, I can understand your reaction to my post. However, I think you and I will "postpone" further discussion on this topic until the time you encounter the same recurring question for the nth time (if you still want to actively participate then). On that date—I am fairly confident—you will remember my post in this thread and acknowledge it without further comment 😀

Finally, the principle of guest etiquette applies here as well. If someone doesn’t feel comfortable in “this, our living room,” they are free to use the hole intended by the mason/carpenter without any disturbance…

Kind regards
