ᐅ Gas Prices – Where Is Gas Still Affordable?

Good morning,

I just received a steep price increase from my energy provider enercity, raising the cost to 15 cents per kWh starting in August. That’s really tough, and I think prices will rise even further.

It’s a strange feeling to be thrown back so quickly into an energy supply situation where you have to figure out how to keep the house warm. It seems to me that the government has given up on the goal of enabling everyone to adequately cover at least their basic needs.

Goodbye central supply structures; now the winner is whoever has solar panels and a heat pump in their new build, while the others are left out.

Welcome back, coal heating 😕

Frustrated regards,

I’m jumping in here with a question...

Utility provider: EON
Tariff valid until October 5, 2022, including price guarantee until then
Not canceled, so it continues beyond that date.
General terms and conditions: Price increases require at least 6 weeks’ notice.

Where’s the catch? Does my contract simply continue under the current conditions for now?

(This concerns electricity and gas, gas currently about €130/month (approx. $140/month) installment (standard supply would be around €200 (approx. $215)) – so I would like to keep the contract running.)

Somehow this seems a bit suspicious to me...

It is the same with our contract with Yippie (a subsidiary of Maingas). There was a one-time increase with a 6-week notice period (since March 2022 12 ct/kWh), after that only this unfortunate surcharge.

In general, be cautious with fixed-term contracts. A 12-month contract period does not automatically guarantee a fixed price for 12 months—even if that was previously common. Usually, prices can be adjusted by the provider within 6 weeks, accompanied by a special right to terminate the contract for the customer (although that hardly helps at the moment).

Always check the terms and conditions carefully.

The same applies to currently seemingly very cheap basic supply tariffs, which can have their prices changed almost daily.

Definitely check the terms and conditions.

That’s the strange thing in my case... The price guarantee was honored. And even after that, no increase has been announced yet... I guess I will just have to remain puzzled and take action if anything comes up.

That is definitely true, but in my opinion, energy policy should not follow any particular political ideology when science clearly shows the right path. The fact that there are parties ignoring the scientific consensus and receiving funding from the coal industry completely disqualifies them. To then say that the CDU made an effort with renewables is completely out of touch with reality.

There are also people who receive funding from the “renewable” industry or its major investors...

I'm not a fan either, but honestly, I choose the party that, in my opinion, does the best government work and aims to provide the best possible life for all of us according to my moral compass. Right now, that’s definitely the Greens. Everything else can be thrown away.

What exactly have they done that’s so great? I’m honestly curious because I just don’t understand it. Unless you’re willing to give up the current prosperity that previous generations worked hard to achieve.
