I thought a garden chat and photo thread would be a good idea.
This way, we have a space to share current pictures and discuss dandelions and other plants.

Hornbeam is commonly used for hedges, so it should be possible to keep it small through pruning. You might want to ask a landscape gardener or a nursery which trees can be maintained at a smaller size by trimming.
Trees over 10 meters (33 feet) tall are not ideal for residential areas with smaller plots.

My parents have a now very large walnut tree in their garden. I still remember how my mother found the walnut as a small shoot and simply re-planted it.

Yes, hornbeam was the only tree I came across that seemed "feasible." However, it is not really one of my preferred trees. In fact, if I wanted to comply with the development plan (which I don’t), I would still have to let it grow to at least 20 cm (8 inches) trunk circumference and 4 m (13 feet) height.

But for this planting season, planting trees is probably no longer an option. I’ll be glad if I can finish my espalier soon and create my prairie bed (or rather a smaller version of it). That will be enough for this spring.

Are you planning a prairie planting bed?
For me, it will be autumn soon. In about 6 weeks, the landscape gardener will do walls, filling, etc.
I want to plant in autumn – even though the recommendation is spring.

It will probably be a mixed flower bed. On the trellis, likely clematis; in front of that, purple bellflowers (or something similar?), which should provide good shade at the base of the clematis. In between, some prairie perennials so far, planned without grasses. Up to now, I mainly have Indian nettle, blazing star, and yarrow. We’ll see how much space is left and whether some hens-and-chicks or something similar will be added. Otherwise, oregano will be sown as a filler for the gaps.

Have you already chosen plants for your flower bed?

I haven’t decided yet.
With around 80 sqm (860 sq ft), you can include whatever you like.
Definitely from ground cover plants to tall grasses, and also bulb flowers for spring.

By the way, Aldi, Lidl, and Netto have solar garden lanterns on Thursday. I’m going to get some—they look nice in the evening. K.
