I thought a garden chat and photo thread would be a good idea.
This way, we have a space to share current pictures and discuss dandelions and other plants.

@Bava ... this approach should generally become the norm ... paying for ideas, etc., and not just reaping the benefits. The 130 euros are, depending on the level of planning involved, partly not really covering the costs, but they acknowledge that someone is putting thought into your surroundings.

I have also seen an offer for planning services from an online garden center.

I also think it’s completely fine to charge a fixed amount for a planning service. Even if you only use the plan as a guideline for doing part of the work yourself.

Our architect (a longtime acquaintance before construction and now also our neighbor since moving in) helped us a lot during the initial planning stage. Without their input, we probably would have designed the terrain level changes in a rather dull way—experts can definitely achieve much more.

In our area, there is a fantastic public space designed by an even more amazing (and unaffordable) landscape gardener, where all the plants are labeled with tags. Over several months, I kept taking pictures of these areas on my jogging routes and hope that our garden reflects at least some of those ideas well. It was my living reference and a great source of inspiration!

In the end, a garden needs time to grow and thrive, and some plants will inevitably die and have to be replaced. Right now, I’m absolutely thrilled about every green leaf appearing on my perennials!

Our cats mess up everything. Every garden bed, the greenhouse, and basically anywhere they can dig – and it’s not just our two cats (I’ve seen them do it both at our place and the neighbors’) but also other roaming cats. We have ants everywhere. After filling my raised bed last year with different layers, including sand, I had ants in it within a few weeks. I definitely couldn’t place a sandbox here. The greenhouse is empty in winter, without any plants, and this past winter it apparently became a nice dry, wind-sheltered litter box for cats – yuck. You can still spot and clean the droppings, but cats don’t just leave droppings^^.

There’s supposed to be a significant frost expected locally in the next few days!

I had the day off today and went bargain hunting at OBI. I have a small flower bed on the side of my front yard that is mostly in shade and partial shade. I’m planning to replant it tomorrow. There’s already a nice old hydrangea in partial shade and two Rosy Boom shrubs; I’ve now bought several creeping cotoneaster plants in different colors, and for the shaded areas, I got moss saxifrage and Caucasian forget-me-nots, as well as some mountain cornflowers for the partial shade. There’s also a privet growing there in the shade, which surprisingly does quite well.

Last week, I visited the local garden center to pick up plants for my window boxes. I went for more classic options like (trailing) geraniums, petunias, and snowflake flowers.

Topic: Voles: We’ve had them since last year as well, or rather the neighbors have them, but they have only dug up my sunbed, which is located right next to the fence. Several roses and perennials have fallen victim to them. I then replanted everything in the area into wire cages (dug up again for that) and continue to do so. They are really troublesome creatures… and we already have so many cats.
