Hello everyone,

We have purchased a prefabricated garage (32 m² (344 sq ft)) and I’m now wondering if collecting rainwater in a barrel will be sufficient for autumn days.

In general, the water drains quite well and, even during heavy rain, only pools in the holes (building site), but not in our garden. (Region Darmstadt)

What would be the most practical way to manage the overflow from the rain barrel?
Connection to the sewer system/planning permission?
Soakaway/soak pit?
Simply burying a drainage pipe in the garden?

I think connecting directly to the sewer system might be a bit excessive, but probably the safest solution.

I’ve also heard of the option to place the barrel on a gravel bed (1 m³ (35 cu ft)).

Best regards and many thanks for your advice,

rainereiner

P.S.: Does anyone know what the cost of connecting to the sewer system could be? Approximately 10 m (33 ft).

In most cities and municipalities, rainwater that falls on private property is not discharged into the public sewer system because most places only have a combined sewer system. This means rainwater and sewage are not separated. As a result, the rainwater from private properties must also go through costly wastewater treatment plants – and that adds to the cost.
Usually, you would need to connect your gutters to your own rainwater drainage system (such as a drainage system or a cistern). In our case, 5 meters (16 feet) cost a steep €3,000.

Wow, just connecting the garage to your rainwater drainage system? That’s intense.
For our entire house, including the complete drainage system, connection to the sewer, and preparation for garage drainage, we paid less than 3000 € (euros). And we’re talking about almost 50 meters (160 feet) of pipes here.

Hello everyone,

We have the problem that groundwater is present from 1 meter (3 feet) below the surface,
so it is recommended to divert all water away.

I was a bit worried about the costs. However, the construction company preparing the gravel base for the garage is doing about 12 meters (39 feet) for 250 euros.
If I had known this earlier, I wouldn’t have lost any sleep over it.

A well is being dug for garden irrigation.
