ᐅ Garage door height for new paving

Hello everyone,

I completed my new build last year and now I’m about to start with the paving.

We haven’t installed a gate yet, so we need to pay attention to the height here. We are still flexible with the height, but prefer the dimensions 5000 x 2125 mm (16 ft 5 in x 6 ft 11 in).

Now my question is, what should the opening height be for a standard gate of 5000 x 2125 mm (16 ft 5 in x 6 ft 11 in)?
1. From the top edge of the paving (after compacting, etc.) up to the lintel (the lintel is also the bottom edge of the driveway opening or garage opening that should be covered by the gate) = 2125 mm (6 ft 11 in), or should I work with some clearance and set the height, for example, to 2100 mm (6 ft 11 in)?

Can someone help me understand the best way to do this?

Thank you very much.

Best regards

I would recommend paving first, then measuring and ordering the gate. It’s easier than trying to pave with millimeter precision.

Yes, the paving will be done beforehand. Okay, then I would say if 2125 millimeters (83.7 inches) are planned, pave up to 2100 millimeters (82.7 inches). If necessary, raise the gate slightly higher; it’s better for the gate to be 2 centimeters (0.8 inches) too large than too small later on. The lintel height allows for this.

However, a standard gate designed for a clear height of 2125 mm (83.7 inches) will not fit into an opening of only 2100 mm (82.7 inches).

@kbt09 is that correct? The gate is mounted on the wall from the inside. This would cover the garage opening and leave about 2cm (0.8 inches) clearance from the upper lintel. How is this done properly? I can't imagine that such precise paving can be achieved down to the centimeter (inch).

Please read up a bit on measuring for doors and gates on the individual supplier websites. I’m not allowed to share links here.

Otherwise, refer to post 7 by @WilderSueden.

You can also send me that via PM if you like.
Yes, we will pave first, which is the safe option, but here we still have the possibility to adjust the height by about ±10cm (±4 inches).
Better to be cautious than have to change everything later or order a custom-sized gate for extra cost.
