Hello,

We are currently planning to build a new single-family house with a gable roof. We really like the version with the so-called hip gable (see attached example image), but our architect said that this poses a significant structural risk and also has several other disadvantages:

- As an internal roof, the risk of water ingress is considerably higher
- Regular maintenance is required
- More expensive to build (about 1500 EUR for a single-family house with 150 m² (1600 sq ft) of living space)

In the new development areas in the Münster region, almost every third house seems to have a hip gable. Now I wonder: Are the builders all willing to take such risks, or is our architect exaggerating?

Thanks for your opinions and experiences.

Best regards

I think you need to view this in context. The risk is probably higher relatively, but if it is done correctly and maintained properly, it should be acceptable. Your architect is fulfilling their duty to inform you.

By the way, I like this too ...
