Hello everyone!

We are building a two-story house with a gable roof with a 25-degree pitch:

Two-story house with terrace, balcony windows, and silhouettes of a family in front of the entrance.

Floor plan of a 4-room apartment with bedroom, rooms 1-3, dressing room, hallway, bathroom.

Plans: Architect (Ingelheim)

Would you leave the gable completely open? This would result in a ceiling height of 4.18 m (13.7 ft) in the center of the house up to the bottom edge of the ridge beam.

Or would you install a ceiling? If so, at what height?

Do any of you have a similar attic roof and can share your experiences?

Best regards

We have a 22° roof pitch and a knee wall height of 2.60m (8.5 feet). It’s hard for me to say whether the rooms seem smaller because of this, but I definitely find the overall sense of space to be much better. The floor wouldn’t be practical to use anyway, and there is enough storage space in the basement. A few additional use options (like a loft bed, etc.) also arise from this or are easier to implement. I would definitely do it this way again!

We are now living in the house. We chose the full-gable option with a visible ridge beam, and it looks great. We are glad we didn’t install any ceilings.

Since I’m currently having EXACTLY THIS discussion with my partner (he doesn’t like high walls, I want it open): PLEASE TAKE PICTURES!!!!

Although we have a lower knee wall, we have a steeper roof (unfortunately), but we still end up with walls over 4m (13 feet) high.

We had it in the old house, but we never really liked it, and in the photos it still doesn’t appeal to my taste. With a nice, open timber structure (roof insulation above the rafters), I would probably feel differently. If that’s not possible, I’d prefer a ceiling height of 2.60 m (8.5 ft).

Well, the remaining attic space is hardly usable anyway. So I can skip the ceiling and have nice, tall, airy rooms. I think that’s a good approach. Karsten
