Hello everyone, I’m facing the challenge of fitting a Billy bookshelf in a room with a sloped ceiling and I’m wondering how to best adapt it to make optimal use of the storage space without compromising the shelf's appearance or functionality. Are there any proven methods to adjust the Billy bookshelf to a slanted wall, for example by cutting or additions? Or perhaps alternative mounting options? I would appreciate practical tips or experiences specifically related to rooms with sloped ceilings. Thanks in advance!

Good morning,

I would like to add that when doing cutting work, you should definitely make sure to maintain stability. The original modules are standardized and include load-bearing elements that can be lost if you shorten them. So, if you adjust the sides or the top, be sure to install additional wall fastenings.

In my attic Billy, I also added screws into the back panel and used metal brackets to securely fix the shelf. This helps prevent wobbling.

It can also help not to use the shelves across the entire width but to create several smaller compartments, which makes the structure more robust.

Furthermore, for sloped ceilings, adjusting the side panels is sometimes the only option, but I would like to point out that you should factor in the working time and necessary tools.

If you are not very experienced with DIY, you can also consider custom-made furniture from carpenters, designed specifically for rooms with sloped ceilings.

I can confirm that!

Another tip: You can also get specially stepped shelves at the hardware store and combine them with the Billy shelf unit to shape the slope.

But the most important thing is precise measuring and a stable anchoring; otherwise, you won’t enjoy the shelf for long.

Good luck!

Absolutely right!

I also want to encourage you to confidently take on the cutting! It feels great when the space finally works perfectly!

The key is to always mark the slope carefully with a tape measure and pencil, and if you’re unsure, measure one time more rather than less!

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out 🙂
