Hello,
I am currently building the walls of my garden shed and will probably work on the front side on Saturday. A front door is going to be installed there. For cost reasons, I would prefer to use a standard size. Is there a standard clear opening width for doors, or are the rough opening dimensions standardized?

Is a basic side door for the garden shed sufficient in terms of quality, or do you need a “proper” front door like the one you would use for the main house?

The former can be purchased inexpensively at most hardware stores in various standard sizes. Check the available options and then build the wall to fit the door. Alternatively, you can customize it through various online retailers.

For example, use the configurator with additional information on the required rough opening dimensions:

I think a PVC side entrance door is sufficient. But they probably have the same dimensions as a front door, right?
Is the room’s external dimension the distance between the reveals, or is that the external width of the door, and do I need to add something to that?

You need to check the rough opening—the required aperture—which is specified by every supplier. The room’s external dimension is not helpful.
See above.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I’m considering the Meeth plastic front door Signum PVC 32. It costs only €399 at the hardware store for a width of 110cm (43 inches).
On another site, the rough opening size for this door is listed as 112cm (44 inches), so about 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 inches) allowance on each side. With the current garden shed width, I am unfortunately 6cm (2.4 inches) too short. What is the best way to make up for this?

  • With insulating bricks? That would involve a lot of cutting.
  • Or can I close the width with bricks and reduce the 6cm (2.4 inches) later? If yes, what would be the best method to do that?
