Hello everyone,

I bought the TV stand "Friel" at the IKEA store in Duisburg because I wanted to give it as a gift! Since it was a gift, I naturally didn’t announce it beforehand, and now I have the problem that the TV stand doesn’t fit in her place due to its size—I must have misjudged it a bit. Well, it’s done now...

I went back to IKEA today because I wrote an email on IKEA’s website explaining that I can't find the receipt and it might have accidentally been thrown away with the recycling paper, and asked what I should do. I just received a reply telling me to visit my IKEA store in person, and they might, as a gesture of goodwill, make an exception for me.

So, I asked at the returns counter today, and they told me they can’t do anything without the receipt, but I could try speaking to the manager. However, she was busy in a meeting indefinitely at that moment. They advised me to bring the item in and ask again later. But they couldn’t guarantee that they would accept the return, as it would be a spontaneous decision. Since I need to borrow a larger vehicle to transport the TV stand back, and if they send me away again without any solution, I’d be really frustrated!

I paid 249 euros (about $270) in cash for the item, and today I saw it only costs 199 euros (about $215) now because it is being discontinued and all remaining stands are being cleared out. It’s also no longer listed on IKEA’s website.

I don’t remember the exact date of purchase, just that I paid 249 euros (about $270), and I know that you usually have three months to return an item, and that three-month period hasn’t expired yet. But they asked me when exactly I bought it so they could check the computer and print out the receipt from there. I don’t remember the exact date, and if I guess a wrong date, they might think I’m lying!

I would really like to get a full refund.

I honestly don’t know what else to do. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find the receipt. I don’t want to sell it privately either, because I wouldn’t get my full 249 euros (about $270) back that way!

This is a really big downside with IKEA, as anyone can lose a receipt! They should take a lesson from Aldi!!

Please help me, because I really don’t know what to do—I also don’t want to make the trip with the TV stand just to be sent home again. I haven’t noticed any goodwill at all!

I really hope you can help me.

A thousand thanks in advance.

The desperate Nati

Hello,

Well, I don’t really see this as a mistake(!) since I just can’t find the receipt—I don’t understand what’s wrong with that(?). I think “everyone” has misplaced or lost something at some point(?). Occasionally, I’ve used my stepfather’s work van (he is currently on a work assignment) when my boyfriend needs my car (Lupo), and I used that vehicle to transport it.

All this back and forth over a simple receipt is, in my opinion, not very customer-friendly—especially since I’ve spent quite a lot of money at IKEA over the years! Aldi is definitely far ahead in this respect!

I don’t want to criticize IKEA’s furniture, but their return service in cases like this is absolutely not customer-friendly!!

Maybe someone else here could help me?
I would really appreciate it.
Thank you very much.

I don’t find anything unfriendly about this at all!

IKEA allows 3 months to exchange goods, but ONLY with a receipt. Also, the price hasn’t been reduced to 199€ (around $215) nationwide; in our store, the regular price still applies. However, that shouldn’t affect solving the problem. I think it’s very accommodating that they even let you specify the day and would reprint the receipt for you. They really do everything to help you get your receipt—I honestly don’t understand what’s supposed to be unfriendly about that.

Try, as already explained, to narrow down the date—it probably won’t be too difficult. If the birthday was less than 3 months ago, you can roughly identify the week... you can check bank statements, and that will show when a larger amount was withdrawn?!

Good luck!

Let’s be honest...

In any store in this country, who offers to reconstruct a receipt based on a bank statement? And in which store will goods be accepted back without a receipt? In which store can I assemble my furniture and then return it with a receipt?

Another example:
A large electronics store doesn’t even provide a replacement device during the warranty period. That means you have to manage without, for example, a TV for a few days or even weeks. But if you don’t have a receipt, they’ll tell you: That’s not my problem. Have a nice day.

For a piece of furniture that costs almost €250.00 (about $265), I keep the receipt. Or do you have that much money? If IKEA accepts returns in the original condition (that is, unopened) with the condition of refunding the lowest price, then I find that reasonable. Otherwise, I would just buy offers at IKEA and return them without a receipt and receive the full price—though not in cash, but on a card. With that, I’d get rich and cheat a company that, in my opinion, is quite accommodating to customers.

This discussion is completely pointless. If you don’t have a receipt, you cannot expect any company to punish someone else for it.
Honestly??? YOUR OWN FAULT...
No offense.

Maybe I should get a filing cabinet to store all my receipts?!

Since there is so little understanding here, I can only conclude that even Ikea employees are among you...

Have you never lost anything important??

This is really ridiculous!!

Maybe you should try to put yourself in my position, or perhaps it should happen to you if you don’t already understand this!!

I was looking for help here, not useless arguments!!

So it would be nice if there are still some people around who can empathize with my situation and genuinely want to help me...

Thank you very much in advance.

Oh, and who said that I assembled the bench?! Nobody! It is still in its original packaging!! Not even a scratch can be seen on the packaging!!
