Hello everyone,

I am planning to build a wooden deck on my new house. My question is: if I use a petrol earth auger and 150mm HT pipes as foundations (one foundation every 60cm (24 inches)), which I will then fill with concrete.

Regarding the ground, it is compacted recycled material, which is why I want to use the earth auger, as mentioned, because it is compacted.

The deck will be approximately 4.00m by 7.00m (13 feet by 23 feet).

Best regards,
Tobi

Hello Tobi,

Too much effort—just use paving stones spaced about 60 cm (24 inches) apart set in screed concrete, then attach Massaranduba wood to a 40 x 70 mm (1.6 x 2.8 inch) substructure using stainless steel screws. Place the substructure on the 40 mm (1.6 inch) side, and every 60 cm (24 inches) fasten with two screws through the profile boards. Don’t forget to pre-drill with a steel drill bit and countersink. Use mounting shims to compensate for unevenness. Time required for two people is about one day. Make sure to have enough cordless screwdrivers. Costs are around 40 €/m² (40 €/10.8 ft²). Durability is approximately 30 years. Oil once a year to maintain the color; without oiling, it will turn gray over time. Depending on the size of the terrace, the whole setup weighs 1–2 tons, so nothing needs to be glued or otherwise fastened.

Hi,
yes, that’s a good idea, but.........................
Don’t you have to consider the frost line when dealing with concrete, etc.?
I think there should definitely be a 15-20cm (6-8 inch) concrete layer underneath since the recycled material only reaches halfway up the house foundation.

No, that’s fine. It’s best to first set concrete edging curbs all around, with the top edge of the curb level with the finished terrace surface.

Then you can easily stretch a string line; the top edge of the paving stone should be 95 mm (3.7 inches) below the string line (70 mm (2.8 inches) for the substructure and 25 mm (1 inch) for the decking board).

Use concrete under the stone only for leveling and to prevent it from shifting. If you need more height, you can also stack paving slabs.

Place a black weed control fabric on the compacted ground first; 25 linear meters, 1 meter (3.3 feet) wide, costs about €55 at the hardware store.

Hmm, I won’t use curbstones because I prefer to lay broken granite around the terrace, which I personally like better. But still, the idea with the paving slabs is great—I will do it like that. Between the wooden structure and the ground, I will place a weed control fabric on the soil and then a layer of gravel.
