Hello,

we received a craftsman’s invoice for the foundation of a single-family house without a basement about a year ago. Before paying the final installment to the construction company, I am reviewing all major invoices according to the Pareto principle.

Approximate dimensions:
Foundation area: 10 x 10 m (33 x 33 ft)
Depth: 30 cm (12 inches)
Land elevation and required gravel fill: approx. 20 cm (8 inches) height

What volume in cubic meters would you roughly expect? I would like to hear your estimates first before mentioning the figure on the invoice. Using my calculation method, the amount seems enough for half of an underground shelter.

The volume figure for the topsoil would probably be quite comparable for a completely flat plot in northern Germany.

What’s the point of these “guess with Rosenthal” games? Just write down what’s on the invoice, and you’ll get opinions.

Also, keep in mind that if a foundation is supposed to be 10 x 10 meters (33 x 33 feet), a larger area will be affected during construction.

You always need much more than expected. Workspace and overhangs have already been mentioned; compacting also requires about 15% more volume. Your plot is probably not as level as you think.

Are you also sure that the gravel was used only for the foundation? Usually, at this stage, materials are also used for things like crane areas and construction access roads.

Guessing game cool 😎 ,
10x10m (33x33 ft) foundation slab, with a working area of 13x13m (43x43 ft) = 169m³ (5,967 ft³),
0.8m (2.6 ft) depth for frost protection + 0.2m (0.7 ft) height = 1m (3.3 ft),
+15% compaction losses,
So 195m³ (6,882 ft³) is a reasonable estimate contribution from me.

And where is the resolution?
Unfortunately, my crystal ball is in for repairs...

The resolution will come as soon as I understand the settlement between the construction company and the civil engineering company. They are currently staying silent; neither company wants to release the planning data. That is why the final payment is currently being withheld.

The fixed price contract already included the foundation and all related work. The civil engineering company was only supposed to provide additional services for raising the property level. The cubic meter figures on the invoice are about 2.5 times higher than the calculation shown here.
