We have received our geotechnical site report. It proposes two foundation options. Our house is being built on a slope, so part of the garden level is fully embedded in the hillside, essentially creating a “partially basement” situation.

The foundation options are:

1. Individual and strip footings
2. Raft foundation

First, what are the differences between these foundation types, and how do they work? Can you generally say which one is more expensive or preferable?

Thank you for the help

You can look this up, both foundation types are acceptable. In northern Germany, strip foundations are preferred. Where walls will be, a trench about one meter (3 feet) deep is dug, filled with sand, and compacted so that the trench remains at least 80 centimeters (31.5 inches) deep, which is considered frost-resistant. Steel reinforcement is placed in the trench, then concrete is poured. Around the building structure, a reinforcement cage made of steel mesh is installed and everything is filled with concrete. Wait until it hardens, then start building the walls.
