Dear *,

During the renovation of our house, we had our basement stairs removed to enlarge our garden.

According to the contract, waterproof slurry and a drainage membrane were supposed to be installed. It has now come to light that the builder "forgot" to do this, unfortunately after gravel had already been backfilled and the floor slabs were laid.

We are now worried about having a damp basement!

What would you do?
Remove and redo?
Are there alternatives?
Who should bear the costs?
The builder suggests creating a kind of waterproof basin by applying a new concrete layer about 30 cm (12 inches) thick to keep water away from the wall.

I am quite perplexed and would greatly appreciate any advice or experience you can share!

Dismantling. He messed up, so he is dismantling it. A contract is a contract.

Hello,

I agree, demolishing and doing it properly. Anything else is shoddy work that saves him a lot of money but will cause you a lot of trouble and expense later.

Best regards,

I don’t find a deconstruction of the exterior wall to be too problematic. I would also insist on a repair.
