ᐅ Pest Problem in the Attic – Experiences

Hello,

we have been living in our house for three months now. We have noticed that there are hundreds of houseflies living in our attic; there really are many. Honestly, I am a bit puzzled because I cannot explain where they are coming from.
The attic is accessible via a pull-down loft ladder, which is always closed. Shouldn't the masonry and roof be sealed well enough to prevent insects from entering the attic? I am worried that next year not flies but a wasp population might establish itself in my attic (there are many wasps in the area).

The roof is covered with concrete tiles, and the roof structure is made of wood. The attic floor is covered with OSB boards, underneath which there is insulation and vapor barrier foil, followed by the ceiling of the upper floor. The masonry is made of aerated concrete blocks, unplastered in the attic area.

Does anyone have experience or advice?

Update from the site manager (I consider him very knowledgeable): Underlay membranes are not glued to allow ventilation. Insects are probably normal, but have not really been a problem in previous houses. Perhaps it is only an occasional issue since it has only been observed at our site in the last two weeks.

I am curious to see how things go next summer..

Hello Markus,
how is it with you after 7 years?
We have been living in our house for about a year. Today I found around 100 dead flies in the attic (unfinished).
I’m a bit concerned about that.

It used to be said that if there are spiders in a house, the indoor climate is very good.

I occasionally find a spider in the house and flies in the attic as well. Not an unusual amount, but from time to time you do find some dead ones on the floor.

Starting in early summer, we also have flies inside the house, which is likely due to the surrounding agriculture. In the neighbor’s garden, about 20 cattle graze from mid-May. My chickens roam freely, and further away there are pigs.

I think this is something you just have to accept, at least in rural areas. Even insect screens / fly screens only help to a limited extent.

If there are too many flies, just buy one can of insect spray and spray the attic. It takes 5 minutes, and the flies are dead.
