Hello everyone!

We built with a smaller general contractor from the area. The installer fitted a heating circuit valve (HKV) without a flow meter. This point is not specified in detail in the bill of quantities.

A friend of mine, about 30 km (19 miles) away, built with the same general contractor (but a different installer). His heating circuit valve includes a flow meter. The same clause appears in the bill of quantities.

Can flow meters in heating circuit valves be considered “state of the art”? Is there any concrete standard or guideline for this?

Can I expect the same performance (with the same clause in the bill of quantities)?

Thank you very much and best regards
Sushi

Flow meters are not essential for the proper functioning of the heating system. Therefore, their installation cannot be expected or required.

Hello Mycraft,
I thought the same. I just assumed it might be mentioned somewhere, since topics like hydraulic balancing and heating system optimization are commonly discussed.

Thank you for your comment.

Well, balancing is possible without the flow meters, so these devices are nice to have but not mandatory... and they are only reliable as long as the system is not affected by deposits.
