ᐅ Floor-to-ceiling windows – Is it possible to extend the frame using Ytong blocks?

Hello,

the architect specified the floor-to-ceiling windows with a base profile of 18 or 12 cm (7 or 5 inches). However, the additional cost of about €270 per window (for 9 units) seems quite steep.

Would it be possible to build the base with Ytong blocks instead? From a thermal insulation perspective, that should be better than an undamaged frame extension, right?

Do you have any other advice or ideas before I bring this up with the architect?

Best regards

What exactly do you mean: a regulation-compliant threshold height to prevent water ingress, or an external overlap of the floor construction?

Hello,

I was referring to the transition in the floor structure.

This is usually done professionally using trim covers. Of course, instead of the classic approach (floor-to-ceiling windows already cause an interruption of the exterior wall on the base slab), you can also extend the exterior wall through that area and lower the window opening only down to the finished floor height. That would mean it is only practical to do this with a floor construction height of about 25cm (10 inches) using a full layer of large block masonry. The third option you suggested, using stones of a different format (and possibly even a different material) independently here, is possible—though in my opinion unusual. For this purpose, aerated concrete blocks are particularly suitable since they can be easily cut to the desired height. The window installer then saves the trim and installs the profile directly at floor level, both outside and inside—in principle just like the other windows.

I would prefer using trim covers instead of attaching full profiles underneath. That would mean adding two extra frame heights (but in my opinion, the price is still too high, unless we are talking about double casement windows).

Hello 11ant,

thank you very much for your detailed response.
I need to check whether trim covers are also offered.

Yes, the €270 (approximately $290) would be for a double casement window. The total extra cost for the frame extensions is €1800 (approximately $1950).
With Ytong blocks, it would probably be possible to achieve this more cheaply.
Would that have any disadvantages, for example, causing the windows to vibrate more?

More compared to what would they vibrate?
