Hello dear community,

I have been a silent reader in this forum so far and am always impressed by the ideas shared here. Now I need some help myself.

We are currently planning an extension to our house. Upstairs, we want to create our new bedroom with an en suite bathroom and a walk-in closet. However, the current design does not fully convince us yet. Maybe you can help us with a creative idea for a redesign.

What is important to us:
- The north side and the street side are at the bottom of the plan. Therefore, we would preferably like to keep the sleeping area on the south side if possible.
- All windows and walls in the room can be changed. Only the door to the bedroom must remain in its current position.

Attached is the floor plan. What do you think? What alternatives do we have?

Thank you in advance for your ideas and best regards

Hannah

I would leave the entrance to the bedroom open (so without a door) to avoid a feeling of being cramped. It also lets in more light.

Do not remove the bedroom door; the light and noise disturb the sleeper.
I would make the entrance door and the bathroom door out of patterned glass doors, simply as a design feature and to indicate occupancy.

In my opinion, the children's bathroom and utility room should be swapped. What does the ground floor look like?
Why would you swap the utility room and the children's bathroom?

This is to keep the bathrooms closer together for the water supply and drainage connections. It also depends on the ground floor layout, including where the kitchen, guest toilet, and existing pipes are located.

When considering modern design, one should not forget the primary purpose of a bedroom: to ensure good, restful sleep, even in summer when daylight lasts up to 16 hours a day.

Sure, having a large window wall opposite the bed is very trendy. But you also need to ask yourself: What do you actually look out onto? And who might be able to look in?

You might enjoy the beautiful wide window at the foot of the bed for only a few months, but you could have to live with its (possibly existing) downsides for decades.

Here are the additional floor plans.

Please be understanding about the layout of the attic floor. I edited it myself using Word, so it’s a bit rough 😉 This level is designed for our eldest daughter to have her own separate space. We plan to build a shed roof, with a knee wall of 2m (6.6 feet) on the north side. We welcome any feedback on this, as we realize that even with careful planning, it’s easy to overlook some details…

Unfortunately, we don’t have any plans for the basement since we won’t be making any changes there and there are no existing plans available.
Floor plan of an attic: bedroom, living area, kitchen, hallway, dressing room, shower, toilet.

Floor plan of a house: office, kitchen, hallway, entrance hall, toilet, storage room, living/dining area, entrance.

Your desired bathroom in the bedroom is located directly above the living room... which means you will need a service shaft. And whenever someone flushes upstairs, there will be noise in the living room next to the sofa as it travels downward.

This is rather inconvenient.

Try to position the bathrooms directly above one another whenever possible. Anything else will only increase the costs.
