The only question we still need to decide on is whether to keep the pantry on the ground floor or not. I think this will depend on how the kitchen designer plans the kitchen, with or without access to the pantry. Because I believe the kitchen simply looks better without a pantry door. Whether it’s practical then is another question.
The visual factor seems to be clearly in favor of the version without a pantry. When it comes to practicality, you have to consider what you actually give up with the no-pantry version. I think people often make the wrong assumption that having a pantry automatically means more storage space:
- Instead of 4 tall cabinets, you can fit 6 tall cabinets without the pantry --> Significantly more storage space
- The narrow 60cm (24 inch) peninsula and the corner cabinets (under the window) become a wider 1.20m (47 inch) freestanding prep or cooking island. I would avoid bar stools here anyway, because you have a nice seating area right next to the kitchen where guests can stay while you cook. Bar stools would just take up unnecessary space at the expense of a wide cooking island. What you lose in storage from the corner cabinets and pantry you almost fully regain in the wider prep-cooking island --> Equal or slightly less storage space
- In many layouts with a pantry, the pantry is also used as a direct connection from the entrance to the kitchen, which is a clear advantage for a pantry. This would be eliminated in both versions here anyway.
- You have a basement! Often people build with a pantry because they don’t have one. In your case it’s different: waffle makers, chocolate fountains, deep fryers, roasting pans... all the appliances you don’t use daily will go to the basement anyway, leaving you more space upstairs for canned goods and other items you access more often.
Conclusion: In my opinion, you don’t lose anything; you actually gain by not having a pantry. In all this, of course, you should also consider the “surrounding factors”: you have a larger bathroom on the ground floor with a shower option.
I admit to having a pantry, or as it was nicely described, a “cooking kitchen and show kitchen.”
We are also going to build a second small room, where we deliberately planned an additional counter line, measuring 2 x 1.4m (4.6 ft) because my wife often runs various intensive kitchen appliances like the Thermomix, Bosch Mum, etc. The noise can become quite annoying in the living area when these devices run frequently and for long periods. Everything noisy that can occupy itself independently is therefore moved to the “secondary kitchen.” Additionally, there is a “mobile” hotplate for frying something that doesn’t necessarily need to leave a lasting odor in the living room. When it comes to storage, we don’t care at all where supplies are kept, but in my opinion, the concept of a pantry being solely for storage is outdated for the reasons mentioned. I also find the often planned narrow aisles these days terribly impractical.
