Hello,

we are currently planning our bathroom. The positions of the fixtures are roughly set, but before the plumbing company can start, we need to define the floor construction in more detail.

This is a new build using timber frame construction. The walls are covered with OSB boards acting as a vapor barrier, with gypsum drywall panels attached on top.

In the other rooms, we have a relatively high floor build-up of about 28 cm (11 inches) because there is an uninsulated concrete slab, on top of which a thick layer of wood fiber insulation and a plank floor are installed.

For the bathroom, we plan to use XPS insulation combined with leveling fill and dry screed boards, with floor tiles as the surface.

What would be a good floor construction setup?

Does this generally make sense to achieve the required height?

01 Concrete slab
02 Vapor barrier
03 Leveling fill
04 Dry screed board, e.g. Vidiwall, as a flat base for the insulation
05 XPS boards for insulation
06 Dry screed board, e.g. Brio, as a base for the tiles
07 Tiles

We want to install only a shower due to space constraints, no bathtub. Our question here is how to insulate the shower tray from below?

Best regards,
Jens
