Hello

We want to install a floating vinyl floor in our new build (we want a floating floor, not glued).

We have chosen Modular One with integrated cork underlayment for impact sound insulation.

What else do we need?
PE foil and sealing tape to tape the joints of the PE foil.

Can we also use PE foil and tape from Prinz?

I also have a question about installation.
Upstairs, we want to lay the floor in 3 rooms plus the hallway.

Can we install the floor continuously from room to room without expansion joints or transition strips?

We would prefer not to use transition strips because we don’t like how they look.

Will there be any problems if we install the floor continuously?

What about the hallway?
We have an open staircase.
Can we lay the floor right up to the edge of the stair railing without an expansion joint?
Or do we definitely need an expansion joint between the floor and the edge of the stair railing?
What kind of finishing trim is recommended for the stairwell?

If we can lay the floor without an expansion joint next to the stair railing, then its height would be roughly the same as the edge of the stair railing.

Thank you very much for your help

@Pacmansh We have 3 rooms plus a hallway on the upper floor.

Rooms = 10, 12, and 15 m² (108, 129, and 161 sq ft) plus a 3 m² (32 sq ft) hallway.

Would there be any issues if we installed the flooring continuously without transition strips?

Could someone also tell me what the finishing strips around the stairs are called?

It's the same as shown in the picture above for us as well.

Unfortunately, I cannot say for sure. If it were me, I would install it continuously.

We installed it continuously throughout. Parador Modular One. The maximum expansion area is, I believe, 12m x 20m (39 ft x 66 ft) – it's indicated on the packaging or something similar. According to Parador, this is the maximum surface area without an expansion joint. The design floor is finished around the staircase, and the gap is sealed with silicone.

We installed Acoustic Protect underneath instead of just a vapor barrier, as it was frequently mentioned as a useful tip.

The room size isn’t larger than 12x20m (39x66 feet), but there are several walls in between that we need to work around.

At the staircase, we just lay it down and apply a silicone joint, right?

In the hallway, we also have a distribution box for the underfloor heating, so we’ll probably lay the flooring up to it and seal it with silicone.

So you would all install the flooring continuously without expansion joints?
We plan to lay the flooring over a total of 3 expansion joints in the screed.

Why did you put acoustic protection underneath?
The flooring already has integrated impact sound insulation.
I even read that it’s completely wrong to install two layers of impact sound insulation, meaning one underneath plus the integrated one.

I think you should read through the installation instructions for the flooring. Quickly, I found the following information about Modular One:

The vinyl carrier board with HDF backing and the special carrier board from Modular ONE is a wood-based material that, like natural wood, expands and contracts depending on the climate conditions. Therefore, the installed floor with HDF backing requires a suitable gap, called an expansion gap or perimeter gap, between all heavy objects (e.g., kitchens) and all fixed building elements such as walls, supports, radiator pipes, etc. Furthermore, when exceeding a defined installation area, expansion joints of equal size must be maintained. An insufficient gap to walls or in expansion joints is the most common installation error. Often, this becomes noticeable only in summer, as the floor expands due to increased humidity and temperature during the warmer months. The expansion gap and wall distance for vinyl with HDF backing, as well as for Modular ONE (special carrier board), should be at least 8 mm (0.3 inches) (see Image 3), and larger gaps are required for bigger areas (see section: Arrangement of Expansion Joints: Room Size Larger than 8 x 12 m (26 x 39 ft)).

Even if the installed material only touches one point in the room (cut to fit), floating-installed material can still warp and bulge. Common weak points include door frames, stair connections, radiator connections, and edge trims.

Thank you.

I have a different question.
If I seal the floor with a silicone joint in the expansion joint at the stair transition—

Silicone joints do work, and with tiles, a silicone joint is also used as an expansion joint.

However, the floor shown in my picture was installed by a professional company.

I am completely confused about what is and isn’t acceptable to do.
