Jassy3138826 Aug 2014 09:17Good morning,
I have a problem that kept us awake at times last night :-(
We renovated an old house and built an extension. The extension is constructed with a timber frame and has a flat roof. On the upper floor (right under the flat roof) is our bedroom, and next to it is a guest room. When it rains heavily, our rainwater downpipe makes a very loud noise. It doesn’t sound like flowing water but more like something being dragged across the floor or something similar. Last night it rained heavily, and we even woke up because of the noise.
In the guest room next door, this noise cannot be heard. We have rainwater downpipes on both sides of the house.
Does anyone have any idea what can be done about this? Or is it normal to hear it so loudly?
Thanks for your help.
Jasmin

Doc.Schnaggls26 Aug 2014 10:11Hello Jasmin,
It's nearly impossible to assess something like this from a distance.
If I were in your position, I would have a roofer / plumber check the rainwater drainage on both sides of the house.
That is definitely cheaper than dealing with even the smallest water damage, in case there is something wrong with the downspouts.
To be honest, I also can’t begin to understand how water could make a noise like the one you described...
Regards,
Dirk
