Hello everyone, I recently noticed some unpleasant scratches on my IKEA BILLY bookcase, which somewhat reduce the otherwise well-maintained look of my interior. Now I’m considering touching up these scratches with furniture wax, as I’ve heard it’s a simple and effective way to conceal minor signs of wear.

My question to the community is: How well does repairing scratches on a BILLY bookcase with wax actually work? Do any of you use special types of wax or have tips for applying it? Perhaps you also have experience with alternative products?

It would be great if you could share your advice, methods, or impressions regarding durability, appearance, and effort required. Thanks in advance!

Wax can help with small scratches, especially if the surface is not deeply damaged. Simply apply it with your finger or a cloth and buff it in. After drying, the shelf usually looks tidier again.

Basically, wax is a proven home remedy to conceal superficial scratches on veneered or lacquered furniture like the BILLY shelf. Its effectiveness depends largely on the depth of the scratches and the type of surface. BILLY shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating, which is quite durable, but for deeper scratches, wax can only temporarily improve the appearance of the damaged area without actually fixing the damage. For a long-lasting solution, touch-ups with suitable repair markers or minor filling work are often recommended. It is important to use wax sparingly and remove any excess material thoroughly to avoid creating a foreign layer that attracts dust.

Hey, I treated my BILLY shelves with colored wax sticks, and the results were really great! 🙂 The scratches are barely visible, and the surface looks much better maintained. It’s fun to do these small touch-ups yourself. Just warm the wax stick slightly (for example, in your hand), then repair the spot and polish it afterward – it works perfectly! So go ahead, don’t be afraid, it’s not difficult!

jordanvin is right, using the wax and a little trick works great! 🙂 Try this: after applying the wax, gently polish the area with a soft cloth in circular motions. This will give the surface a nice, even shine—almost like new! Sometimes a bit of olive oil helps to make the wax more pliable, but be careful not to use too much, or it will become sticky. And don’t worry about the result—it really brightens your mood!

My question to the community is: How effective is using wax to repair scratches on a BILLY shelf really?

To answer precisely: Wax is mainly suitable for superficial scratches and minor signs of wear. For BILLY shelves, the melamine-coated surface is often hard and unvarnished, which means deeper damage cannot be fully concealed with wax. Using color-matched furniture wax or wax sticks is the best compromise if you want a quick visible improvement. It is important to prepare the surface thoroughly (remove dust, degrease) and work carefully to ensure the wax adheres well. For deeper scratches, I recommend supplementing with a combination of repair wax and an appropriate touch-up pen, as wax alone will not hold or provide a sufficient visual fix.
