Hello everyone, I have a BILLY shelf from IKEA, and unfortunately, I’ve noticed some minor scratches on it. I’ve heard that furniture wax can be used quite effectively to repair such scratches, but I’m unsure about the exact procedure. Are there any specific techniques I should follow to achieve the most discreet result without causing stains or unsightly marks? What type of wax works best on the surface of BILLY shelves, and how should I apply it? I would appreciate any firsthand tips or detailed instructions, as I don’t want to damage the shelf. Thanks in advance!
Hello,
I would like to add some information about the process of repairing with furniture wax:
For a BILLY shelf with a melamine-coated surface, the top layer is indeed very durable, but scratches can still become visible quite quickly. Since your scratches are shallow, you already have good conditions for a simple treatment with wax.
My approach is as follows:
1. Preparation: As mentioned before – clean and degrease the area thoroughly.
2. Choosing the wax: I would recommend using a furniture wax specifically designed for light wood tones or white decor. Sometimes there are also repair kits for melamine-coated furniture that include wax as well as a plastic scraper.
3. Application: Take a small amount of wax on a lint-free cotton cloth and gently work it into the scratch using circular motions. Important: Don’t use too much, or you may end up with sticky or shiny spots afterwards.
4. Polishing: After letting it dry (at least 30 minutes, depending on the product), lightly polish the area to a high gloss with a soft cloth.
Some waxes harden well and also protect the spot. If the result is not completely satisfying, you can repeat the process with thin layers.
Also: If you want a clear idea of how the shelf will look after the treatment, test the wax on the back or inside of a less visible shelf panel.
Yes, a scouring pad can cause more harm than good on such delicate surfaces and will make scratches worse.
I hope my tips help you!

I once considered using a scouring pad, but that seems rather counterproductive here, right?

I agree with the previous recommendations to definitely use a suitable furniture wax that matches the color of the surface well. Be careful not to apply too thick a layer; it’s better to apply thin coats and polish thoroughly.
For light-colored BILLY shelves, you can also use a clear furniture wax that does not intentionally add color but simply fills scratches and protects the surface.
When polishing, it is best to use a microfiber or cotton cloth that does not cause additional scratches.
Good luck!
