ᐅ Fitness corner in the utility room?

Quick question, is this a viable option? It’s about a so-called power rack and a bench for bench pressing. Is the utility room a suitable space for this? Surely better than an unheated attic or garage? What do you think?

So, I have the rack in the basement, and in a small room two things would bother me:
Sliding the barbell into the rack (it’s 2.2 meters (7.2 feet) long, so you quickly hit the wall). And the ceiling height! The overhead press hits the ceiling, at least with my height (187 cm (6'2")).

daniels87, roughly how much space is needed? 2.20 meters (7 ft 3 in) wide with an Olympic bar plus X, and how much depth space including the rack?

Jochen is probably not referring to a device that should be outside, but to real movement, which the house itself encourages.

Exactly!

By the way, many people plan a kind of multipurpose room for hobbies, sports, PC use, and other activities. Most call it an office 😉

Alternatively, it can be used as a child’s room, as long as not all planned children have arrived yet. Once the house is full, you probably won’t find much time for sports at home anyway.

Do you have underfloor heating in the basement? If so, I would definitely check how heavy the system is... you don’t want your screed to crack and damage the pipes.

Best regards

I have plywood sheets underneath, with safety mats on top.

At least on one side, there should be enough space to easily take out the barbell, so you don’t always have to position it diagonally. I do deadlifts in front of the rack; otherwise, I would have to remove the safety bars every time. I need to measure everything soon.

Ps: Don’t let anyone talk you out of having the room. There is always time for training. It’s better to skip the TV.

Many people set up a home gym without having seriously trained before. Then they have an elliptical trainer and a cheap multi-gym strength station. Of course, that doesn’t work out.

An office, for example, is unnecessary—you have that at work. A desk doesn’t need its own room.
