Hello everyone!

Attached is the first floor plan of our house, especially the kitchen. Do you think it is too large, or are the walking distances too long? We are two parents with three small children. The kitchen will be slightly smaller. This means the utility room wall will be moved about 60cm (2 feet) into the kitchen to create a coat recess under the stairs. We would probably like a kitchen island as a workspace. Do you have any ideas? Another question: Would you keep the door to the utility room as it is, or would you move it into the kitchen? This would of course reduce storage space but provide direct access. ??

Ground floor plan: kitchen, living area, hallway, stairs, garage, utility room

Nice idea, but my wife would prefer to have a window above the sink. We're a bit worried that the kitchen might end up too large.

And why the window above the sink? We currently have a window in that spot. When washing dishes or filling pots with water, I never really look outside intentionally. I think it’s more of the idea that you want a nice view. But in reality, you hardly use it. You could try observing where you actually look when washing up.

The kitchen is quite spacious in the plan. But you want to take some space away for the utility room anyway (why exactly? That creates an awkward corner in the kitchen layout). Besides, you have a fairly large dining and living area, so the proportions should roughly work out. Otherwise, the kitchen might feel cramped.

No, the kitchen isn’t too large. You just have a lot of storage space and room for extras. I’m also on team aircraft carrier. That way, when washing dishes, you can look towards the living area. I think it’s nicer than standing directly in front of a window. An aircraft carrier kitchen looks modern, tidy, and really stylish!

Wall cabinets are usually not that deep. They are only 30-40cm (12-16 inches), not 60cm (24 inches).

The height varies, so you can definitely change the fronts!

And with money, anything is possible anyway. Discuss with your kitchen fitter which cabinet details you prefer.

Keep in mind, however, that wall cabinets or a nice display cabinet do not contain drawers.

If I were to choose the larger one, I would definitely go for a "carrier deck" style. It looks neat and organized, and theoretically, you could still install a patio door between the kitchen island and the tall cabinets (to easily grab herbs from the garden).

We also went back and forth between a U-shape and an L-shape with a peninsula.
A U-shape gives you a more spacious feel and the option of a small table in the middle for snacks or extra workspace/surface. With an island, you have to walk more around it, but it allows for a more open connection to the dining area and looks more modern... Storage-wise, in our case, there is practically no difference in the end.
In terms of cost, the peninsula is more expensive for us because we will be using a downdraft extractor above the table, which costs 1,000–2,000 USD (or equivalent) more than a standard wall-mounted hood...

We plan to place the sink on the wall under a window (which means no wall cabinets next to the window) and the cooktop on the peninsula. Maybe that could be an option for you?!

Thank you very much for the great ideas. I find it incredibly difficult to make a decision.

Uh, why are you arguing so much about the sink and where to look? I use a dishwasher.
These days, the sink is overrated – at most for quick rinsing (a pan that can’t go in the dishwasher or a kitchen knife) or for draining liquids and rinsing fruits and vegetables.
