Hello,
we have bought a house and are currently renovating it.
Since there is a chimney, we would like to install a fireplace stove.
In total, we want to spend about 2500€–3000€ for everything.
We have a semi-detached house of approximately 125m² (1345 ft²) plus an attic.
We have looked at a few fireplace stoves at the DIY store. The prices range widely from 300€ to 1500€.
We like one priced at 1000€ with 7 kW. Does anyone have experience with fireplace stoves from DIY stores? Are they recommended, or is it better to buy from a specialist fireplace retailer?
I would appreciate your answers.
Best regards

Hello,
with a bit of luck, you can find something from a stove maker for around 1500 € (about $1650).
Store-bought stoves won’t explode or anything like that. However, I have heard from two colleagues that while these stoves do work in the sense of “burning wood and producing heat,” they often didn’t draft well at the beginning. This means you might get smoke inside your house initially, or the glass window would quickly become sooted up, making it hard to see the fire.
Eventually, both of them threw out their store-bought stoves and replaced them with ones from a professional stove maker.
Best regards,
Andreas

The issue of poor draft and sooting of the glass now has little to do with the stove itself and more to do with the chimney/flue and the burning behavior of both the wood and the user 😉
I had an entry-level stove in my terraced house and was very satisfied with it. With soapstone or a larger thermal mass, the price increases, but not only for that reason would I avoid the cheap models.
Installation should be done by a professional; it’s best to check before purchase whether the draft is actually suitable.
And of course, additional costs for the flue piping apply.
