Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum and hope this is the right place to ask a few questions.

My girlfriend and I are looking for a house and have already viewed numerous properties. We have now found a nice one, but there is one issue: the garden has two large ponds, and at least the first and bigger one would need to be removed. We have no idea how to best approach this or what costs to expect. Does anyone have experience with this? The pond is about 2.5 meters (8 feet) deep and approximately 6 by 6 meters (20 by 20 feet) in length/width. So, there is already a fairly large hole in the ground. I have also considered whether it would be possible to pour a foundation in the hole to build an additional basement room. But here too, I have no idea what costs this might involve.

If anyone can offer advice, we would be very grateful.

Best regards,

Have it filled in! The prerequisite is that a large vehicle can access the pond – otherwise, it becomes a labor-intensive job to transport 100 cubic meters (130 cubic yards) of soil/sand there with a wheelbarrow. The soil will also settle over time....

(6 x 6 x 2.6) m (20 x 20 x 8.5 ft) is approximately 90 m³ (3,180 ft³). You will need roughly 90 m³ (3,180 ft³) of fill material. Depending on the type, that is about 90 tons. Here, 1 ton of screened topsoil costs 15.60 euros net (including delivery and installation). Let’s say 19 euros gross. That puts you at around 1,710 euros to fill the hole. Plus or minus 50%.

Of course, you don’t need 2 m (6.5 ft) of high-quality topsoil throughout. There are probably cheaper options for most of the volume.

You will also need a pond pump, some garden hose, to pump the pond dry (sewer system? Neighbor’s field?). Then clean up (liner?), then refill.

Wait one or two winters for the soil to settle.

Just because there is a pond, I wouldn’t build a basement. What would go beneath the basement? What do you plan to do with the space where the pond is now?

First, you should determine what type of pond it is. Artificial? Natural? With liner? Or naturally water-retaining?
