ᐅ Fiber to the Home (FTTH) – Wi-Fi Router, Landline Phone, Computer

Hello, technicians in the forum.

I have the feeling that my electrician is not in control of the situation.

We have FTTH, fiber optic all the way to the house. Since yesterday, there has been a gray box installed with two tubes of fiber optic cables visible. I assumed this was the telecom provider’s equipment. I then watched their FTTH video. They will install a fiber optic modem next to the box. Correct? So far, so good. From the modem, it is then the electrician’s responsibility to continue the wiring. A cable runs inside the walls to my office, where a Wi-Fi router, landline phone, and PC are supposed to be set up. They installed a telephone socket in the wall, a TAE connector. But in the telecom provider’s help video, there is no telephone socket, only a network cable outlet, into which the router is plugged. Then the phone is connected to the router. Is that correct? If so, he still needs to change it.

Please clarify. Karsten

I have to completely agree with Alex85 here. Are you seriously trying to convince the self-proclaimed "technology skeptic" Nordlys over 8 pages that he absolutely needs Gigabit LAN and ideally fiber optic (LWL) preparation?! If he’s only getting 30-40 Mbit via Wi-Fi on his Medion notebook, he probably won’t even notice.

Of course, some people here are pleased about the “cut corners” with the low-maintenance Nordlys. Since he often emphasizes this simplicity and shows no understanding for other approaches, that’s somewhat understandable. Still, you have to keep things in perspective. Just give it a try and that’s it. You’re doing that anyway. There’s also a plan B, so everything’s fine.

Read again; then you would know that Nordlys already has fiber optic installed in the utility room; but prefers to keep his router in the office, and unfortunately only has a 4-core doorbell cable between them; instead of a proper CAT cable with twisted pairs and good insulation as is usually the case.

Most people don’t want to pressure him any further.

I don’t need to read this again. It’s clear to me that FTTH terminates in the utility room. I didn’t mention fiber optic cable by accident in the context of Gigabit LAN. Read it again. Oh, people usually install a CAT cable? That’s something. So now I understand your advice to tear the walls open again.

A bit of schadenfreude is understandable, but in the end, it’s no big deal. A mistake that at worst will cost around 100€ for a second speaker, Wi-Fi, or powerline adapter. He will survive it and won't have to stay offline either.

That would really be a pity, as he is a true asset to the forum!
So, dear Nordlys: Good luck and keep us posted!
