ᐅ Feedback on the Ikea Kitchen

Hello everyone,
things are moving forward for us now. After visiting quite a few kitchen outlets in the past, we finally decided on IKEA. Mainly because it’s affordable – secondly, because the kitchen salespeople were almost driving me crazy in the end (a $1000 discount because the sun is shining…). IKEA doesn’t offer any consultation at all… not great either, but still better than that.
We were somewhat fixed on the layout because of the windows… now we are even more set because of the utility connections… The screed is already in place.
The cabinet fronts are Hyttan and Bodbyn – we will buy the appliances separately.
We thought the waste bin should be a pull-out unit under the sink.
A quick note about the tall cabinet row (since it’s not that visible) on the left side of the plan:
60cm (24 inches) cabinet, oven, 60cm (24 inches) cabinet, refrigerator, small freezer.

We would love to hear your opinion. Are there any things we absolutely should change? Since neither of us really has a sense for design, we would appreciate any tips or comments on that as well.
Thanks and best regards

Thank you for your feedback. Here it is again with 2 m (6 ft 7 in) tall cabinets and without the open section (which would otherwise have held newspapers and similar items):

Modern kitchen: island with sink, L-shaped cabinets, oven, window.

Modern kitchen with wooden cabinets, island with seating, extractor hood, sink, oven, window.

3D kitchen rendering: island with sink, built-in oven, tall cabinets, window with garden view.

I like the oak tall cabinet wall. You’re planning to go with the Ekestad front after all, right? As an alternative for the base cabinets instead of Brobyn, I would try the Hittarp front. I think it also has a country-style touch but is visually more flexible for organizing the base cabinets into drawers and pull-outs because no additional horizontal lines are created by the framed fronts.

Oh, and if your height allows, I would suggest increasing the oven and the adjacent placeholder cabinet by one module in the tall kitchen cabinet wall … or are there two modules? In any case, it should be arranged so that the upper cabinet doors align in one row. This would also provide more elbow room. Also, I believe it was mentioned before, I would start the layout after the corner with the freezer or pantry cabinet, then place the oven cabinet and placeholder cabinet, followed by the refrigerator. This way, if the oven cannot be placed higher because you are shorter, the upper cabinets, as they are now, would still look better.

Regarding the oven position, the highest shelf with the oven should be approximately at shoulder height. From this, you can subtract about 15 cm (6 inches) from the top edge of the oven to estimate the height of the rails or technical components behind the control panel. For a person 165 cm (65 inches) tall, shoulder height would be around 140 cm (55 inches), so the top edge of the oven should be roughly at 155 cm (61 inches).

Currently, these are the grooved Hyttan fronts – but Ekestad is also an option (they just appear lighter in the planner, but in reality, they aren’t quite as bright).

This is how it would look with Ekestad and Hittarp:

Kitchen with wooden fronts, built-in oven in tall cabinet, sink and window with garden view

For this awkward corner, I have now planned a wall cabinet... with open space below down to the countertop – otherwise, the dimension grid doesn’t fit well with the countertop.

We are both rather short, around 160cm (5 ft 3 in). My wife doesn’t want to swap them because she doesn’t want the refrigerator next to the oven (even though she has been told many times that it doesn’t affect energy efficiency).

In the 60s next to the dishwasher? You’re right. People probably spend more time at the sink than at the stove.

Yes, exactly. That’s what I meant. I don’t know how you manage with the remaining drawers, but I can only say that having the trash bin in a corner is pretty annoying.

I also prefer the slightly lower tall cabinets and really like the oak tall cabinets. (I wonder why... )

Suggestion for the tall cabinet row from the window side: pantry cabinet, stove, pantry cabinet, refrigerator. That way, the two wouldn’t be next to each other and it would look less clustered.
(By the way, this is how ours looks: https://www.hausbau-forum.de/threads/Entwurf-ehf-mit-Hanglage.10198/page-2#post-93810)

EDIT: I see you changed the lines anyway — it already looks much nicer and more balanced!

Hmm... Wildthing suggested a possible layout, and that’s how I would do it as well. The oven will have to stay at that height, which means there won’t be any clearance for your arms right next to the countertop.

If you add a wall cabinet next to the tall cabinet unit, I would suggest bringing it slightly forward flush with the front and choose oak like the tall cabinet instead of a glass door. This requires a bit of creativity when mounting but is much more practical to use, especially if you are smaller in stature.
