Does anyone have ideas for our bathroom design? We want to optimize it.

What must stay:
Shower and toilet (the depth will be increased to 1 m (3.3 ft))
Floor-to-ceiling window – the number and arrangement can be changed.

Everything else is adjustable:
Bathtub
Vanity with countertop basin
etc.

Any suggestions?

Why should the mechanical ventilation system be turned off?

In hot temperatures, mine only runs in absence mode at about 70m³/h (70 cubic feet per hour). The extraction is naturally not as strong then, but I haven’t noticed it not working at all.

If the mechanical ventilation system were completely turned off, logically nothing would be extracted from the toilet either, so it would be as if there were no odor extraction at all. 😉

However, it should be noted that this is not the only extraction in the toilet/bathroom. There is also the regular grille in the ceiling, through which most of the exhaust air is extracted, just like in any other house.

Thank you, Matte,
I will pass this on to our mechanical ventilation system installer right away. Do you happen to have one from Zehnder as well?

Well, I think we will have a small washbasin installed in the toilet. That way, it doesn’t matter if the larger washbasins are a bit far from the toilet.

Yes, the Zehnder Q350 with an enthalpy heat exchanger. I would highly recommend it, as it prevents or significantly reduces issues with overly dry air during the cold season.

Why should the controlled residential ventilation system be turned off?

In my case, it only runs in absence mode at about 70m³/h (40 cubic feet per minute) during hot temperatures. The exhaust is naturally less powerful then, but I haven’t noticed that it stops working altogether.

If the controlled residential ventilation system was completely turned off, logically no air would be exhausted from the bathroom, so it would be as if there were no odor extraction at all. 😉

It should also be noted that this is not the only exhaust in the bathroom. There is also the regular ceiling vent through which the main part of the exhaust air is removed, just like in any other house.

The TCO 2.5 from Tecalor or LWZ 604 from Stiebel Eltron has a summer bypass and switches itself off when the outdoor air temperature is more than 1°C (2°F) warmer than the indoor temperature for over an hour. It switches back on when the outdoor air temperature equals the indoor temperature. It is currently not running during the day.

Since the walls of the toilet and shower are still going to be moved, the floor-to-ceiling window in the upper left corner will be removed in its current form. It will either need to be narrower or removed entirely. The dead corner in the upper right is also quite inconvenient.

Once the shower and toilet are fixed, the popular T layout could be completed. This would mean installing double doors as a window in the center, and the bathtub could be framed with furniture opposite it.

The bathroom door would need to be relocated. Since the hallway is not visible, I assume this should be possible.

Just showing some alternatives.

Thank you, Katja,
that would be a very good idea; I could come around to the "widely popular" T-layout.
I’ve simply seen that one too often already, so I don’t like it anymore.

Also, the steam shower is a prefabricated unit – meaning the doors and such cannot be moved, and a T-layout would block the door.

The bathroom door should stay where it is.

I’ve attached an alternative; please forgive me – I made it quickly in Word.
Not much has changed... hmm
