Hello everyone,

Are fiber cement siding panels really as durable and colorfast over the long term as the internet claims?
I like the "James Hardie Plank" as a cladding option, but there are hardly any reviews.
Can anyone say if it is truly maintenance-free and stays looking good for decades?
Thanks for the feedback.

Fiber cement boards, commonly referred to as "Eternit," are indeed very durable and low-maintenance. As a ventilated facade (in any variation), they are, to my knowledge, the most commonly used solution. However, if you expect them to remain attractive for many decades without any decline, I have to disappoint you. They also undergo normal (albeit slow) aging.

Maintenance-free? What do you mean by that? Brick and render facades are also maintenance-free, if you disregard occasional cleaning.

No regular painting, for example. It’s acceptable if the color changes due to fading. But it shouldn’t look worn out after 15-20 years. In other words, it should be fully pigmented.

These are all such products. They still look good even after 30-40 years.

Our previous townhouse complex had fiber cement panels as decorative cladding over the third floor and on the balconies. When we sold after 17 years, the panels looked as good as the first day (ours and those of the other houses). Unfortunately, I only have an old photo.

There are also Prefa or slate options. Should the color tone be appropriate for the material?
