Hello everyone,

In 2015, we built a prefab house from Schwabenhaus with a flat roof. Whenever there is frost and the temperature drops below 0 degrees Celsius (32°F), extremely loud cracking noises can be heard from the roof inside the house. These sounds are comparable to a gunshot—so loud that they wake you up at night. The noise can even be heard by neighbors.

We have not received any response from the builder regarding this roof issue.

Maybe someone here has experienced the same problem with their roof and, ideally, has found a solution. I would appreciate any helpful advice!

Thank you very much in advance and best regards,
Flinstone

Heating system knocking when it delivers more power at lower temperatures?!

What type of roof covering is used? Metal roofing? Metal parapet?

Here, something also cracks in the cold, or when the sun shines on it. I think it’s the carport roof. It must be some kind of stress that is being released. Even a car with airbumps (Cactus C4) makes cracking noises while driving after it has been outside in below-freezing temperatures, because there is expansion and contraction between the different materials.

Hello,

these are probably thermal stresses caused by temperatures below 0°C (32°F) that make building components shift slightly against each other. The snap you hear is the result of that.

But identifying exactly which parts are involved and stopping it? That’s difficult... Is there any way to access the roof structure? Do you have a chance to get temperature sensors inside?

Best regards,

Andreas

There are some great tips being shared here again. The cactus also cracks; that’s just how it is.
Or, why the temperature needs to be measured now is beyond me. (Especially when it’s known that cracking occurs around zero degrees.)

@TE: You’re not the first person to have cracking noises from the roof. Try searching the forum, the “Green” section, or directly on Google, as there are several results. (I remember some posts on this...)
There have also been some measures suggested. Whether they were ultimately implemented successfully…?
