Hello,

this year I finally want to have my house plastered and plan to get quotes and invite painters/plasterers to visit.
Of course, I want to be prepared. What questions should I ask the plasterer, and what needs to be clarified?
I am not handy at all, trained as a businessperson, so I feel quite helpless.

Thanks in advance for the tips!

Ideally, such work should be designed, tendered, and supervised by an independent contractor or planner—especially if you lack the necessary technical expertise. It should not be left to the executing company to design the measure themselves. Bids should be requested based on a standardized bill of quantities (BOQ) or scope of work, as otherwise, they are not comparable and each company will offer what they consider reasonable and sufficient. Usually, this is not enough—except for the companies themselves.

Selecting the plaster system includes examining the substrate, the exposure of the wall surfaces (weather side/shading/sun exposure), the pretreatment, the actual system (mineral-based? organic?), and the coating (paint). For mineral-based plaster, plasterers or stucco contractors are the appropriate partners, while for organic plaster, a painting contractor may be suitable. If an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) is to be installed, different requirements naturally apply.

Special attention should also be given to the base area, the building waterproofing in the base zone, and any existing or planned perimeter insulation.
